EA-81 Disto disassembly

Well I couldn't find a disto at the jy today so I got some new bushes from my mechanic. He assured me that it was a breeze to take apart. As it is snowing outside I figured I'd start by taking apart my old broken on from a dead engine to make sure I don't mess the rebuildable one up. Well he said to knock the roller pin out. I couldn't do that and drilled it out but still the gear won't come off the shaft. Any ideas or should I just take it to him. There aren't any places around here that'll rebush it except him and I don't want to chance not having it in the same position when I get it back as I don't have a gun.

hehe no really it came outa a 83' single range 4x4 wagon, pulled the engine myself.. and i'm sure it was original cause it looks like it.. its now in my hatch tho..

 

only thing different i noticed was some of the internals, they looked totally different from the hitachi.. otherwise the vacuum advance and wires coming off it are the same..

 

if you don't want it i might stick it in my hatch to check my hitachi.. at 1800 rpm's no matter the gear, its got severe lifter clatter.. the old engine (supposedly new shortblock) did the same thing.. the only things i used off the original motor was the disty and intake.. so my guess is the hitachi might have something wrong with the vacuum advance part and its not retarding or advancing like it should..

 

acctually tell ya what Ben, i'll put that nippondenso disty in there tomorrow and if that fixes my clatter problem, you can have the hitachi.. all you'd have to do at that point is swap your vacuum advance parts over to it.. other than that it is in great shape..

I was told by CCR that it's very difficult to install those bushings without the proper equipment - the old bushing has to be ground out, and the new one pressed in, and if it's not done just right, the disty will be toast. I think the guy from CCR said he ruined about 10 before he got one right..... I chatted with him over email when I was looking at my options for doing the bushings or getting a rebuilt unit.

 

I had mine rebushed by http://www.philbingroup.com - they are local for me, and the bushing was $35 (parts and labor included), and the vacuum advance was another $20 - so $55 total to have a perfectly working disty again....

 

And I marked my disty with a black marker - the guys at phibin saw my mark and actually put some white paint (paint pen I guess) over it to make sure it wouldn't rub off when they were working. Very profesional I must say. They even painted my vacuum advance gloss black for me - part of the service for $20.

Yeah shipping to OR would be at least $15 each way so that is out. I guess I'll drop it off at his shop tomorrow and let him go at it. At least I feel better about breaking my broken distributor. Hee hee. He did assure me it was easy as anything. Maybe that's just because he hates working on my BRAT as it isn't a nice new Legacy or Forester. He has to think back a bit.

 

Thanks for the offer Meeky but you're busy enough man! I'm quite lacking in the knowledge when it comes to electrics so might as well let a mechanic take care of it.

Shipping to OR would be nowhere near $15 each way. More like $8 each way via UPS I would say.... a disty only weighs a few pounds and it's a small package....

 

XSNRG was telling us about shipping - he shipped a whole set of rear discs for $30 - rotors, backing plates, calipers, and brake lines....

 

He also shipped TWO EA81 coupe doors for like $60......

 

I shipped a 50 lb LSD diff in a bannana box for $22.50......
