SUBARU3 Posted February 29, 2008 Share Posted February 29, 2008 (edited) Now that I got your attention! OK.....it appears that we are reaching the end of the usable life for the Gen 1 heater cores. You can repair them yes, but then they fail again in short order. (Too many failing on me). I'm not taking the dash out every year. What are the alternatives? There are tons of heater cores on the market, although none that are the exact size/style I need! I looked at the heater core book at the radiator store. I guess matching up the size and making it fit is the next best thing. Has anyone done this? What number, style , type core did you use? I'm thinking about having a "special order"/group purchase done. We are all going to need these! Any interest? Ideas? Manufacturing company? Or if somebody knows a pretty good replacement, please let us know the info. Does anyone have an old one laying around, that we can get the dimensions off of? That may be a big help. moosens Posted February 29, 2008 Share Posted February 29, 2008 Stage I is different from Stage II by virtue of one little stinkin pipe being at a different angle. Same location,different exit angle. There are two p/n's for the Stage II. One is for Stage II 1977 and 1978. And one is for '79. The FPM shows them NOT being interchangable. Why? I'm not sure right now but will investigate. I know early stage 2 cars had smaller inlet and outlet pipe sizes, but the core dimensions are the same. The hose size can be worhed around with an adaptor. Yes the heater valve is another problem! I think a radiator shop might be able to make these to our sizes. I will have to inquire locally and search the web. If you guys could look in your area for radiator/heater core shops that would be cool too to compare to. Looks like the #s are Todd (3) Paul (4) Crabman (2) Subiguy (1)? The heater valve is what I really need (as others have also mentioned). Saw one on eBay once, wanted $US50 and would not ship to Australia. Somebody that would be willing to accept payment from one member, pay the auction transaction, have the item shipped to them in _____ and then ship it to you in (this case Aussie land). I also have a backup in great shape too. So scratch me off the list. But the heater cock itself would be a nice thing to get for a backup. Does anyone have dimesions for that?? I'm under the impression that aftermarket heater cores are still findable for Gen 2 cars. Just check out ebay item numbers: 350030814985 150209680593 180174995838 I am pretty sure that all of these are incorrectly listed as being compatible with 80 and 81 brats. They do not look like this picture of a heater core pulled out of an 81 brat. The tubes are at different positions, in different angles. Furthermore, I find it hard to believe that a core would fit an 80 or 81 brat, but not a 78 or 79. Anyway, whats it going to take to get some gen 1 heater cores made? My post above is Gen 1/Stage 2 Subaru heater core size. Gen 1 Brats are stage 2 vehicles too. (Not to worry Crabman) 1980 and 1981 BRATs are the same as the 77-79 Cars. This post is in the historic forum and is for 70s Subarus and up to 81 BRATs. This is about heater cores for those vehicles. FPM also shows the resistor for the blower also being a different p/n for '79 and non interchangeable. Core p/n's: 6740 64130 for all models '77 Stage II and '78 6740 64131 for all models 1979 To those who don't know about FPM's they have a column for "interchangeability" from year to year. This one for 1979 shows "D" which the book declares as non interchageable old to new or new to old. :-\ I have a '78 and '79 but not about to attack either this week.. I'll try to get a look side by side later this weekend. p/n 6740 64100 is the Stage I core for 1977 and previous,but I'm not sure how much previous. Possibly all '74-77. I think we need to get a hold of a stage 1 core and compare to stage 2. Sometimes the part #s are irrelavant. We need to eyeball this. If we all needed the same core, that would be great. I know I am looking at modifying my heaterboxes to fit new cores. That is the point that I am to. I need cars that don't leak steam on the windows. Repairs don't seem to last in these 30 year old cores. Too much work to have a leak every year! I know the cores from all stage 2's and Gen 1 BRATS will interchange. We need to all pool our sources, call around, investigate and get this off the ground. I'm working on it now. I think we need a radiator that shop could fab these up. I think we could do 25. Jonv23 Posted March 6, 2008 Share Posted March 6, 2008 I am interested in a core as well. I found a NOS valve so I am set there, but I think I have a VERY small leak in the core. I have a 79 brat, so I would assume that it is a gen 1 / stage 2? I wish there was a way to replace the core without tearing the whole dash apart. My dash is PERFECT. It doesn't have so much as a hairline crack on it. Does anybody know if there is a way to replace it without tearing out the dash? I have a custom radiator shop in the town where I live, so I will contact them and see if they are able to take a sample core and remake them as well. Seems that demand is low at this time of year and my time is short. That said, I will build the request list and work to get this underway.
