I assume you're referring to the Phase-II EJ25, which, in the US, wasn't used in the Legacy 'til 2000 (or perhaps even 2001). It'll be obvious when looking at the engine's timing belt cover...the Phase-I (DOHC) will have two "dimples" in the parts of the timing cover that cover the camshaft pulleys, and the Phase-I (SOHC) will have one.
