daviddare73
Hello there, I'm wondering about getting a tranny rebuild for my dual range 4wd 5spd 1986 Wagon. The 4th gear isn't wanting to go when shifting down, unless I put it into 3rd first. Also, it's leaking fluid from the pan and the hi/lo gear selector. I haven't seen any rebult tranny's so does that mean no one knows how or parts are unavailable? Please let me know. Peace, Yuba49r
nipper
Its not that no one knows how too, its just that it is expensive and labor intensive. Sounds like you need new synchros. nipper
idosubaru
subaru transmissions are cheap, reliable and easy enough to find that rebuild prices aren't worth it to most people. it can be done and has been done though. i'd buy 4 used ones before i pay for a rebuild. GeneralDisorder
The going rate for a used transmission of that type (in good condition) is around $75 to $100. You can buy 5 to 10 of them for what a single rebuild will cost. The Subaru 5 speed's generally last 300k+. Usually outlasting the engine by quite a bit.
