Legacy AWD 5 speed swap

Well, based on numerous opinions, the main shaft bearing on my 5 speed is shot. Car drives great, just noisy in all gears, so Im off the junkyard for a replacement.

 

It is a 1991 2.2 L AWD 5 speed. Do I need to stay with 1st gen Legacy (1990-199?) or will other year transmissions fit?

 

Also, I hear opinions to remove the motor and trans together and then swap and re-install. Opinions?

you should be able to sway from other years. Just need to make sure the gear ratio is the same for the front and rear.
