Ultimate Subaru Message Board

I like to say that you're on one of the best Subaru repair manuals right now :D

I rarely look at my maunals anymore, because I mostly know what I'm doing now anyway, and this place has one thing that a Haynes does not: one-on-one conversations with knowledgeable people. :)

Ask away, someone can probably help

This is my first Subaru so I am not sure where everything is at like I did with my Honda. I do not have any problems with the car right now. I just like have the book as a Ref. guide to so me where something is located under the hood. I am glad that I found this message board because I agree they are a lot of help.

You are right in that there are no books for 99-up Subarus, at least not yet.

I'd say the only option you have is an FSM, which is going to be very expensive.

But keep in mind that a repair manual is intended to be a supplement, not a substitute, for basic car knowledge. If you're not really sure how to do something, do NOT rely on a repair manual as your only source of information. Ask a mechanically-inclined friend for advice, ask here, or even get other manuals. Just the gathering of many different ideas will at least increase your understanding of the procedure you're about to perform.

Sorry to give you a speech, but I've been disappointed by manuals in the past, and it has cost me quite a bit of money and time to fix something I screwed up because the manual didn't explain it accurately.

And welcome to the board BTW!

Haynes seems to be pretty decent, but since I'm a complete novice when it comes to auto repairs, I've been reluctant to go whole hog on something based solely on what it says. Example: I was really nervous about swapping the knock sensor on my 96 OBW because the Haynes said to remove the intake manifold and drain the coolant. One a very complex endeavor, the other a time-consuming hassle. After reading a few posts on this board and others, I realized that all it took was a socket wrench and the pulling of a wire ... 5 minute job at best.

At worst, it can lead you down an unnecessary road of frustration, busted knuckles, and a 3000lb paper weight. At best, it can help you save a bit of money and lead you to better knowledge of how your car works and how to tell if your mechanic is leading you straight or handing you a line of BS: "Well, your blinker fluid needs rotating and your grommet bearings need flummoxing. That'll be $800 ... plus parts and labor."

US$20 will give you 72 hours in which to download the entire service manual, as well as technical service bulletins and owners manuals from techinfo.subaru.com

Up til now, it's the only fault I've found in that manual, and I have read most of it - bedtime story, honey? - and know my car very well.

Chilton's has the proper procedure for knock sensor swap (for the most part) but shows TWO sensors. 96 (at least) has only one. Guess it's tough to be a be all end all manual for 11 years worth of MYs.
