swi66
Instrument lights went out on my 98 Legacy "postal". It's not the fuse. I've heard there is an illumination box under the dash???? Where is it and what does it look like......... and what is its proper name. Is this something I might find aftermarket or on e-bay???? Thanks. nipper
It's an illumination control module. I went through two of them adding JDM gauges. It's on the knee panel to the left of the steering wheel. Best way yo find out if it blew is to smell it. If it blew out you can smell the magical smoke that escaped. nipper
nipper
PS. They are like 100 bucks new, so ebay, here or a junk yard is your best bet

Thanks, now I'll know where to look.........
OB99W
The module is labeled "Illumi Con Unit". If any lit accessory has been changed or added recently (radio, for example), make sure the wiring was done correctly, or you may be replacing the module more than once. j2coe
why can't we just buy new smoke that we can put in since nothing electrical will work once you let the smoke out of it? sure would have saved me some money a couple times.
Cougar
I think the "new smoke" procedure has been successfully done before but it is a very long, complicated process and way beyond the scope of this forum.

It's not specific to Subaru, but still makes for "interesting" reading. See http://www3.telus.net/bc_triumph_registry/smoke.htm .

From the smoke kit article:"Also, most of the electrical devises in early Datsuns were copied from Lucas." Well no wonder Datsun had to change their name (to Nissan)! gcleeton
I lost some smoke from my 96 Legacy somewhere along Sheridan Drive last week. If you find it get me on the blower and I will give you a reward if you are a rich sixteen year old widow.
