Best year for EA82T chassis?

Recommended Posts

I might be in the market for an EA82 turbo wagon. I would be modifying it, and I know that the gen 3 heads would be the best of those to have, but what other significant factors are there? Ive heard of the electronic boost cut, and what years were affected by that? Thanks for the help fellas!

the only real difference in the chassis is the wiring.

85-86 the same. boost cut can be bypassed via vacuum line.(vane MAF),

87-90 is a little more updated in the seats and dash and doorpanels and such. also has the hotwire MAF, with the elctronic fuel cutoff. and they have 4 more HP than the 85-86.. oh yeah.. different fron marker lights too.

Scrapdaddytatums 89' gl-10 turbo 4wd auto wagon didn't have an lsd.. just a plain old open 3.7 diff...

maybe the lsd was on the 5-speed models.. but deffinitely not standard.. just thought i'd throw that in, not to be rude or anything.. just stating what i've seen for my own eyes..

as far as chassis goes.. i'd say go with the latter year 87-89.. NOT a loyale.. gl or gl-10 deffinitely..

Just a small clarifcation: The 89 GL-10 5 speed manual transmission models had LSD standard, the FT4EAT automatics did not. (I drive one, Dr RX straightened me out as I to thought it should have an LSD rear)

As for the question, I have both a GL and a GL-10 wagon.

Both hot wire MAF. My pick for comfort is the GL-10 for hot rodding the GL weighs less, but the GL-10 gets a rear anti sway bar, the turbo GLs do not. Both do have rear disc brakes.

To avoid the noid of electronic fuel cut pre 87 models have the vane (flapper door) MAF, it has been said they are easier to modifiy. Adjusting the spring in the flapper door can enrichen the mix, or so they say.

If you choose an earlier model stay away from the automatic 3AT. Problematic and very low eff.

If you are all about performance - go 3 door RX - not a wagon, but lots of cargo room in the back and they come with a 10 speed tranny w/LSD. Plus they have stiffer susp bits.

Doubt you've read this far, but hope it helps.

I like 'em all but the '87/'89 is probably the best all around GL-10 Turbo Wagon in my opinion.

Here's a few things I like about these models:

Colored bumpers

Nicer grille

Better mirrors

Superior Digi (this is a biggy)

Steering wheel

Side note:

I don't want to start a debate but feel this needs clarification.

There is only one subaru that came with a standard LSD like the RX, it was the '87 to '89 Full Time 4 Wheel Drive 5 Speed Turbo, it was never standard in any ('89 turbo) other model*

The 89 GL-10T is one helluva nice car!! Mine also happens to be a touring wagon, which is a cool touch.

I don't know the earlier models as well, but the GL line seemed to improve a little each year, so the 89 is as good as it gets.

The Loyales regressed, IMO, but are still good cars.

Skip, I need your opinion on a turbo car issue. I'll email you off the board.

RXs have better weight distribution (weight ratio) then other EA82s????? That's a laugh. There are only a few things that make an EA82 series a RX, and it is hard for me to even think of any of those that would give it better weight distribution (weight ratio).

Freak, I don't know of an electronic boost cut that Subaru put on any of these cars, it would have to be after market. Yes the later the model year (newer) the better.
