Reading Engine Codes

Recommended Posts

Guest 91Loyal

Can anyone give me a quick update on how to check engine light codes with out a code key for a 91 Loyal wagon.

My daughter has the car now in MIlwaukee and has 145 K on it and is getting an increasingly frequent intermittant check engine light. Car runs and idles good, but I suspect an O2 sensor. She was just going to replace it, but as a college student, I don't want her just guessing at and purchasing replacement parts. She is more than willing to take on the replacement, but I suggested we check out the codes first.

Given the fact that it is intermittant and not on constantly, the computer will still record the problem won't it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Larry J

Josh's site has instructions.

Car should store codes even with the CEL off. Good idea to check codes B4 throwing parts at a car. If it does not have drivability issues it could be the canister purge solenoid valve, or some other sensor like the knock sensor. Good luck.;)

you can try the procedure on my site. I'm not sure if it's the same for the loyales.

If they don't work, I'll move this over to the 80's side, as they would probably know.

Thanks for the ideas, but I'm not sure we will be able to find the test connector.

Does anyone have a good description of the test connector or a photo of it for the Loyal wagon? Sounds like the one inside is quite a large piece, but the one on the firewall sounds like it might be more of a standard plastic electric connector. Sorry, but I will be trying to describe this to my daughter, who is quite mecanically inclined, but I will not be there to look at this my self. Thanks Larry J.
