89 GL hatchback

Recommended Posts

I have a 89 subaru GL hatchback and I was looking for a conversion kit to change it over from a carb to fuel injection. does anyone know where I could find one. Also I was looking for a shop where I could get a body kit and a spoiler for the car.

MOST importantly does anyone know how to replace the stock radio without makeing it look like crap.

Knight, welcome to the board. Nice to see a local.

Where about in P-burgh do you reside?

I'll give a shot at a couple of your questions.

1) a conversion kit to change it over from a carb to fuel injection

No "kit" per say exists as far as I know, Holley makes some universal kits - there have been attemps at converting to Subaru SPFI (Single Point Fuel Inj.) and a very interesting conversion to a Bosch CIS system but you are limited by the head config. The injector mounting takes some ingenuity.

Here is the result using the search funtion for "SPFI conversion" you might find interesting

2) a shop where I could get a body kit and a spoiler for the car.

The pict of your car makes it hard to tell what model it is, please post a side view.

1989 it is probably is what we commonly refer to as a 3 door coupe, but the head lights say different. I didn't know they imported Hatches in 89??

If it's 3 door coupe, kits can be found (hens teeth but they are out there), this model was also sold as an RX. They had the body kit you seek. If it is indeed a Hatch then?? Most guys lift them and but big meats on them.

3) MOST importantly does anyone know how to replace the stock radio without makeing it look like crap.

As you have no doubt learned there are a very limited number of aftermarket head units that will fit. Many of us use an extender housing to cover the protruding part. These are available on Ebay and at several online companies.

You could try a search for stereo installation. I came up with this

Hope some of this helps.

aha, another 89' ea81 hatch.. just like mine :D

welcome to the board.. as far as i know about body kits, you pretty much won't find one for an ea81 hatchback..

don't know much about the fuel injection either..

i do have a pioneer flip face cd player, 200 watt amp, and 2 10's in the cargo area.. BOOM it goes.. gotta put my smaller subs cause the 10's are too much boom..

i'll snap a pic of my stereo console so you can see where i mounted mine.. will post it back here shortly

yup... hatchbacks came until 89, last year they got put in the USA. I have an 88.

undoubtedly, your car is near exactly the same as mine. It is possible to get a hatch tail/fin from any wagon/hatchback equipped with one, I think unless your willing to fabricate something up yourself, that's pretty much your only option.

As for the engine, you could find an EA82 SPFI car, take the pump, ECU, fuel lines, manifold, ect. and swap it over onto your engine--> EA81 NA Carbed. There is some funny business with the distributor I've heard, but oh well... it IS a possibility.

Or you could do something a little easier... like change the carb over to something that is a TBI carb, put in an engine management system of some kind, and put in a high PSI pump with a regulator in the front... this way, you get SPFI, keep your same manifold/fuel lines, and yeah...

Of course, with enough thought and an inventive enough mine, you can do anything.
