torque converter

Recommended Posts

How can you tell if one is bad? And is there anything special you have to do when you install one? I had mine on the engine when i installed it but after a few days and some serious grinding sounds with sparks the tranny does nothing. Just trying to figure out if i just need a new converter. Thanks jay 85 turbo wagon 3spd auto.

The sparks were coming from the bell housing. I tightend the bell housing bolts and the noise went away. At first I thought the starter was not fully disengaging because it was a very faint sound sometimes. But I'm going to hopefully pull the motor this weekend to see whats up hope it's something simple.

i know on ford and general motor auto transmissions, when you install the torque convt onto the tranny input shaft you have to be sure to "engage it" completely onto the shaft.

you turn the converter while "pushing" it onto the shaft as it has to engage like 3 sets of splines. you turn and push until you "feel" it go on 3 steps.

dont know if soob convts are the same but if convt was not engaged all the way on the shaft it could cause your symptoms, could be why bell housing bolts loosened after install as convt could have "moved back" after spinning?

could be something else but just a thought...

It needs to be on the tranny when it is installed. not the engine. you will be unable to seat it properly if it is attached to the engine. After you slid it onto the shaft, keep turning until you hear it click into place twice

There is a very good chance that the splines on the tranny are toasted

O.K I got the engine pulled. The splines on the smallest shaft were screwed up. Now my question is the middle shaft pulls right out, i'm wondering if the smaller shaft pulls right out without screwing anything up inside the tranny it feels like it possible would pull out. If this is the case then i'm assuming all i have to do is replace the smaller shaft and torque conveter.Any help would be appreciated, i don't won't put it together wrong again.
