The Scooby Posted January 19, 2004 Share Posted January 19, 2004 well as some might know i am moving to phoenix arizona in july for college. and after seeing some people's cars, like the rooinator and such, i was thinking of lifting my 86 EA82 wagon and putting on some tires that can get me in the back desert in the sand and play a little. then also when i get back to take the muck trails my old trucks i had used to conquor. so if anyone could give me some recomendations, for instance maybe a different car, or if not, what to do with mine. but keep in mind, this car will have to be a daily driver, pass emissions, drive from seattle to phoenix more then a few times with no problems, and still be plenty capiable. thanks. Rooinater Posted January 19, 2004 Share Posted January 19, 2004 pheonix area has a lot more rocks than yuma. tons of dunes down here in yuma area. and rocks too. the highlight there is more of the rocks. i have plenty of gps fixes for trails around pheonix. from easy to most difficult. i'll come up and help you with anything you need help with, ie lift install... your car should be fine. how reliable is it now?? just get a pkdavis 3" lift or i think byb australia is making a 4" now for your style. do you have the d/r transmission?? that's a must. 27" ssr swampers on drilled chevy rims or 14" pugs. they are radials and one of the most quite mud terrains i've ever had or ridden in a vehicle with. you'll also need to saw-z-all the fenders. trim them up a little so they don't rub. a properly jetted weber should pass emissions. cause washington does not have underhood inspections. getting skid plates like tex has on your lift blocks right in front of the rear tire. is a good idea. i recomend dual electric fans and maybe a hood scoop or cowl scoop. just cause it gets around 120 degrees in the summer time. those are all the major things you'd need. everything else is just custom work. and making it unique or to your liking. always could send your car to mudrat and get a tcase mod... don't need that though unless you want to be trying the hardcore trails. as for the driving long distances and having little problems. just make sure you inspect bearings before going on long trips. also carry spare radiator hose and water. those were the only problems i've had on trips back and forth from everett, wa and arizona. keep everything up to date on tune ups and lube changes too. be on top of your maintenance. ever need help, want to get together, go wheel, party, or whatever my cell # is 4253593927. it'll be back on tuesday. phone broke and new one comes tuesday. The Scooby Posted January 19, 2004 Author Share Posted January 19, 2004 well i was thinking about gettin another wagon and just keeping my EA82 wagon stock for a daily driver. then get like a 80 or 94 wagon with a D?R trans, manual, put a weber on it along with dual exahaust, chop the fenders, i got street signs and bunches of steel to make skid plates. what year/engine/trans combo should i look for in a car to build. and by the way, Rooinater, your car is just plain bad a$$. Rooinater Posted January 19, 2004 Share Posted January 19, 2004 thanks for the compliment. if you are stuck on a wagon and you want another. this is my suggestion. and just mine. get a ea81 82 to 84. swap in a 85 or 86 5 speed d/r out of the ea82. better low range and better gearing. make sure you aren't gonna be scarred to dent her. mine was a perfectly straight body when i got her. now she's seen it all. first dent i freaked a little, since then i don't really care. then a welded rear diff. you can remove one axle for street driving, so it performs as an open diff in front wheel drive. which it is a 10 min. procedure to remove an rear axle on the ea81 bodied cars. a little longer on the ea82 body's. i did that for years. then go with the 27" swamper SSR on 14" rims or 15" rims. i might be getting beadlocks next year so i could possibly sell you mine begginging of next year. i suggest the 4/3" pk davis lift. small modifications are needed to the shift linkage. but shouldn't need it if you use the actual 5 speed linkage. i had the old linkage modified so it looks stock in the interior. a Weber is a very nice addition to any subaru. i don't know what i did with out it. you might just want to cut the cats and put a larger muffler. to free up the exahaust. if you go true duels on a none built motor you might lose some power... not sure. mine works great with duels. but it's 115hp motor. it'd be nice to not be the only lifted subaru in arizona! The Scooby Posted January 19, 2004 Author Share Posted January 19, 2004 well my EA82 is going to get a weber, im going to port match the intake, port the heads, get a custom cam for a higher powerban pull like from 2,000 to 7,000. ive built man engines for my VW bug i had, i actually got my bug to run a 12.6 in the 1.4, a twin turbo 2100CC motor. that was fun, doing a launch o the street, on street tires and lifting the front wheels for about 40 ft. and yes, i would weld the rear, and run single echaust, better because less things to rip off the car, lol. my ea82 might get duals, but probally just a turbo muffler when im done building it. Rooinater Posted January 19, 2004 Share Posted January 19, 2004 keep me informed on your progress, or what you'll be doing. you have my # if you need anything. and if i'm headed up to pheonix i'll give a shout. when do you leave to pheonix?? i'll warn you to get the major parts in washington. like differant tranny.... i'm sure pheonix has bigger junk yards and probably have the parts... but i know down here and what i've heard about up there... they rip you off. they won't sell certain parts seperate, or they just want to darn much. not always. and pheonix is supposed to be way better for junkyards. The Scooby Posted January 19, 2004 Author Share Posted January 19, 2004 ok great thanks for the heads up. but also my grandparents live in san diego, so if i need anything my grandpa drives up to seattle and back every few months to check up on his houses and such, so i could have him grab the parts, plus he has 2 extra motors and a 86 4wd tranny with dual range. and ya i will be there for atleast 21 months because thats how long my college lasts for me. but if my fience goes she will be attending the art institute of phoenix which is a 3 year school, and if she does then i will be down there until the graduates. so most likly i will be there for a while. Just one warning, If you register you vehicle in Maricopa county (Phoenix and surrounding communities) you will have to get it Smog inspected. They DO look under the hood and under the car and pressure test your gas cap/tank as well as sniff your tailpipe. So don't get too obviously radical under the hood and don't lose the catalytic convertors. (until after inspection that is) The test is run at idle and at speed on rollers, however they can't deal with full-time 4WD and only test them at idle and in newer cars pull info from the on board computer. Of course with an old sooby they probably couldn't tell the difference anyway. As for driving out in the weeds, take Water, spare belts and hoses, water, cell phone, CB, water, and more water. Rooinater Posted January 19, 2004 Share Posted January 19, 2004 several gallons in the spring, summer and fall months. i was bringing 2 to 3 gallons just for myself last fall when i got here. right now i'm bringing 1/2 to a gallon. in other words with the under hood stuff. keep an intake manifold with stock gear and marked hoses to where they go. the weber illiminates about all emissions. all i have is the pcv system with my weber. how often do you smog test in pheonix? cause i was thinking of going to UTI for Auto tech training when i get out of the corp... but probably will go to a school in the great NW. ABdad Posted January 19, 2004 Share Posted January 19, 2004 Emissions tests are annual except for the newest cars and then its every two years. I've never actually had all that much trouble getting anything through, Except an old Datsun with dual sidedraft carbs, which always ran too durn rich. We get stuck with oxygenated fuel here (alcohol or MTBE added) which really does seem to help the older cars pass. A gallon or so of alcohol in the gas is another popular trick. When it comes to the under hood plumbing and hardware as long as it looks like it's there and hooked up, they are happy. My old chevy had a hollow smogpump housing and all of the lines plugged up with ball bearings and then reconnected. Ha! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Only Tucson and Phx metro require emissions in AZ, so I just registered the car to a friend's address in Safford. They never gave me any trouble. Rooinater Posted January 19, 2004 Share Posted January 19, 2004 that's the school i was going to go to. then i joined the marine corp. 27,000 was too much to go into debt for me. so i'll make the corp pay for my schooling when i get out. i'm going to be taking welding here when i get back from deployment. i had recieved a small scholorship from my highschool to help pay. but not enough so i turned it down. i'd say just keep it registered in washington. that way when you move back up there you don't have to go through state inspections. mine wouldn't pass. no cats, duel exhaust, no emissions, probably differant vin codes on the doors than the body, legality of lift, doesn't have fender flares or mud flaps, and will have beadlocks. technically all kinds of violations of washington. but no one cares. i know around here there are like no cops anyways. billions of border patrol to one or two cops.
