Gas Tank Hose Replacement?

Hi,

 

Does anyone have experience replacing the main, flexible hose connecting the filler pipe to the gas tank in an early 90's wagon? It looks like the only way I'm going to be able to do it is to drop the differential and then the tank, is this true? There are access holes for the fuel pump under the rear rug but it doesn't allow enough room to get my hands in there.
