a question for anyone versed on using craigslist
is there any way to search the complete state rather than having to choose a region at a time?

I do not believe so. Luckily for me, the state I live in doesn't have "regions".
But, it doesn't take much longer to search each region. Although I do understand why it can be annoying...

Also don't try to search too much using crazed list at once. If you try do the whole country, craigslist will ban your IP. It slows down their servers.
