96Outback- ABS/electrical problem

Recommended Posts

Guest 96outback

All,

I have a 96 Outback with a wierd problem. About every 3 months, the car goes through a phase when then ABS light comes on (cold start), fan motor shuts down & car is locked into park. Last week, I had to override the Park solenoid to get home. Goodyear thinks it is the ABS solenoid but it doesn't explain the fan motor. I'm reluctant to spend extra $$ there or the dealership until I get a feel for what is wrong.

Thanks in Advance,

I agree with you that it seems strange that the fan would lose power. It may be worth the investment of a service to help solve this problem. I would do some before tests on the fan circuit and ABS circuit. Wright the test points and voltages down for future reference. When the problem happens again you will have some data to compare with on this problem. It sounds like you are dropping some supply voltage somehow and it causes your problem to happen.

yep, something's losing power, agreed.

park solenoid must be energized to release.

fan must be energized to spin.

ABS must be powered to be happy.

You need a wiring diagram, looking for the common thread...

How do you resolve the problem when it happens?
