89 gl 4x4 Posted May 16, 2009 Share Posted May 16, 2009 looking for any info on changing the 4spd (4x4) in my 89 gl to a 5spd 4x4 the year of transmissions will be the same. are the rear drive shafts the same? any mods or adaptations I will have to make? But no the driveshafts are not the same, you will need the driveshaft from the donor car with the 5 spd. Then you will need to make a center bearing mount for that driveshaft. Also the tranny crossmember as well, then you'll need to combine the two tranny crossmembers to make one that will fit the 5 spd tranny onto the car. Also, you'll need to change the shift linkage.
