Forester Gets a "Good" in IIHS Side Impact Test!

The IIHS has just devolped a new side impact test using a crash barrier moving at 31mph that mimics a large SUV. The Forester equipped with side airbags did the best! Who knows what the ratings would have been without side bags, but who cares. The B pillar crush percentage was only 40%, so with or without side airbags it still would have done well, as long as the dummies head wouldn't have hit the barrier. Here's the "raw" data.

What's interesting is that only the Escape/Tribute did as well, and only if equipped with side airbags which are standard on the Forester. All the other SUV's were horrible, many with over 50% of B pillar crush.

Those were some bad crashes. 70mph into a brick wall! I've seen peole die in less severe crashes then that. A local person was just killed in a crash on I-83. He was driving a '00+ GT sedan on the on ramp to I-83 when an axle broke off an 18 wheeler, and the axle rolled down the road up the on ramp and slammed into his drivers side door. What a freak accident.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":\">
