XT4 $WD Problems/question

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hello to all, This is my first post so bear with me. I have a 88 XT4 with push button 4wd. I never used the 4WD until VA got 4 in of snow dumped on us. I noticed it worked so thats good. Problem is that it feels like its dragging when Im coasting. Next issue, I cant get the damn button to pop back up!! HA HA.

Also, I noticed that it wont stay running when I first start it up (when its cold out). Possible auto choke not working???

Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers Chris in VA

good to see another Virginian... where about are ya?

with it not idling when ya first start it up: it should be fuel injected. so if its not idling i would check out the TPS (throttle position sensor) and maybe replace the O2 sensor if it hasn't been changed in awhile..

the dragging issue: how are the tires? if say the fronts are new, and the rears are worn out, and in 4wd it might feel like you describe, but it is probably the drivetrain binding due the tire differences.. i know my little hatchback does this for the same reason i just stated..

i have sorta eliminated this by puttin 30psi of air in the new front tires, and 40 in the rear worn out tires.. its just enough to make the differences null..

now the button not popping back up i can't help ya with.. never had a pushbutton 4wd soobie before.. could be just stuck from dirt/grime that gets in around it.. i'm not sure if the shift knob unscrews on your car, but if it does i would take it off and see what goin on..

Hey thanks for the info. Im in the Navy in Norfolk. I got the silly button up so the dragging sensation is gone. It still doesnt want to stay running in the morning. Once it warms up its OK.

What should I pay for this TPS part? Can I put it in?

Ill have it looked at soon if I can figure out this cold start issue and have them renew the gear oil in both the transaxles and look for any binding. Can you think of any thing else to do? thanks Chris

PS FLY NAVY!!!

I would also check the coolant temp sensor.. they get corroded and can make those motors do some weird stuff.. often times they just need to have the contacts cleaned.

IMO, its unlikely that a TPS would be the issue if its only a when the car is cold.
