last year for metallic brakes?

I read on other boards that people need new pads at 30k miles or so on the newer OB's. I have a '98 Outback with 99,000 miles and was thinking I probably will have to have new pads in the next 20k. Then It dawned on me that maybe I still have the old style pads. Does anyone remember which year the government eliminated metallic pads?

they haven't. I can get semi-metallic pads, carbon-metallic, etc anywhere.

 

Unless you're thinking of pads with something else in them.

Asbestos maybe?

Thanks, you are right, it was probably asbestos. A couple of years ago one of my backyard mechanic neighbors was lamenting the fact that brakes were not as long lasting etc. But I have had good service from mine as a daily driver.
