  1. that looks normal, and benign - barely even looks like it's leaking and would easily roll a few 10's of thousands of miles without replacement......and there's no coolant in the picture. without seeing any coolant i wouldn't make anything of the 4-5" perceived difference, it's not a diagnosis at all without repeating it a few times to verity

  2. cam seal cover might be the cam seal carrier alloy housing, I should have read better before I got some poor fella 9who has not returned yet) trying to fix an alloy thread with zip tie :)

  3. Bigsky, Its an expensive fix if you pay a shop to do the job and buy new parts, but pull one from a wrecking yard and get your backyard mechanic friend to install it would be the way I'd go. Jury rigging what solution you have suggested is going to cause head aches down the road. The air bag removal and steering wheel removal are not that challenging, just BE SURE to disconnect the car's battery and then wait 30 minutes before you start the work!!!!!! Car airbag systems use capacitors to store enough electricity to fire the bags if the battery cable is cut during an accident. The charge dissipates in 20 minutes or so rendering the air bags safe to handle, so they won't explode in your face. Don't mess with an air bag if you don't follow this step. They can kill you at close range. Here's a free download of the service manual for that year: http://jdmfsm.info/Auto/Japan/Subaru/Impreza/1996-2001 Service Manual/

  4. You just need to wire in a VSS Pro from The DCCD guys. Works off the wheel speed sensor: https://www.dccdpro.com/product/vsspro/ GD

  5. Thank you to all who replied and for supplying the solution, this not-well-known info about the "virgin" switch. It was switched by one of the crew at the car wash as they fussed to wipe the muck from the dashboard. Now that I know about this feature, I feel like I've been admitted to a secret society... no longer a virgin, so to speak

  6. Maybe i'm just plain odd for thinking this but NO car is going to be good on glare ice. A subtle crosswind can change the path of the most surefooted vehicle in those conditions. The newer outbacks are substantially bigger than the old ones. This could be creating a sail effect. I'm not discounting mechanical causes on some older cars, but the earlier poster with a brand new car shouldnt have this kind of issue IF the wind isnt blowing. Ive driven all manner of subies up to the 2000 models, in all manner of conditions. On ice, none were great. I had to slow down a lot. It really sounds like an overconfidence issue to me. 60kph is too fast on ice unless you're in a tracked vehicle, or have chains on.
