  1. there is more to steering than just the power steering unit and the rack... what I don't see mentioned is if the tie rod ends or ball joints have been checked, or the front struts/tophats for that matter... the struts DO turn on a bearing in the tophat. any of those components being worn out can give you unstable steering feel. check ALL components related to to steering. Then make a diagnoses. Currently you are only looking at a portion of it. eta: don't forget the steering column, either.. there are joints there that can wear out...

  2. google search took about 8 seconds: https://www.partcycle.com/parts/2005/Subaru/Outback/400/Transmission Assembly/770108/AT, Exc. Outback, (2.5L), Without Turbo, California Emissions/item/9576538?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIuef41rGS3gIVCD0MCh0v8A1jEAQYAyABEgKSV_D_BwE

  3. frankly, I have more concerns about stop-start and electronic parking brakes than the CVT.

  4. Take a look in your area... When I was at the dealership, we bought several good used ones for around $500. We had several that had out-of-warranty torque converter failure, and it was cheaper to get a used trans than a new converter.

  5. That's the thing - I haven't seen any FB or CVT issues personally yet. Acquaintances, friends, and family driving these things who typically come to me with questions are cruising along without issues. Also Subaru's growth over that same time period is going to result in increased *numbers* of vehicles with issues even if the *rate* stays absolutely flat. If the CVT has the same amount of failures as the older EAT trans, you'd see the same rate of failures but 3 times as many in quantity due to sales increases from like 180,000 to almost 700,000 in those 10 years. It wouldn't be hard for anecdotal people...which comprises most of this country...to make incorrect assessments from something that isn't noteworthy. There are FB and CVT issues but let the data speak not emotions, anecdotes, and opinions...

  6. I’ve done this prior to our last trip: Worked a treat and made packing/retrieving gear soooo much easier compared to the old setup. It’s also lighter There’s a kitchen cabinet that slides in under the left shelf - it will end up on a set of slides so you can use it from the back of the vehicle or remove it and use it on a bench/table etc. Our setup is pretty much sorted now. I’m very happy with it. Cheers Bennie

  7. seriously doubt a 'downgrade' is practical - wiring harness and computer issues would be horrendous to work around.

  8. First and foremost stop throwing parts and hoping it’ll fix a problem. Is your CEL on? If so pull the codes and report back. Have you done a tune up using quality plugs and wires? I’d start there. Acceleration issues can be so many things including the fuel pump, clogged cat converter, and many things inbetween.
