  1. Where can I get one at a good price? Complete rebuild kit. Seals, gaskets, rings, ect. I'm planning on buying the XT sitting in the partsyard... a rebuild later with a new oil and water pump and battery, it should be a happy little wedgie. (new exhaust and twin turbo'd too) All of this work to come within about two or three months time.

  2. Hey guys. Been gone for a bit, bought an old Chevy truck and rebuilding the 454 has been the priority. I think we decided to just leave the Subaru alone. We will still take it out and do fun things, but for now we’re just gonna get the engine running strong and make sure it’s mechanically sound, and then it’ll be our full time camping rig. I hope this thing can handle backwoods in stock form, I’m sure we’ll be pushing it to it’s full limits at times.

  3. Thanks Crazyeights! A couple of cool old subes in Boulder. And a sad pic from Denver. @JonOfScioI'm glad that you are saving an xt from the same fate. You can't buy a car from the junkyard here anymore The xt is rare to begin with, less than 100,000 worldwide over the six year production. Sorry to hijack with a bunch of pics, and answer your engine questions with a bunch of xt trivia, but I'm a geek like that, I can't seem to resize the xt6 pic in the junkyard, but you get the idea. Cheers man! Happy wrenching! Here is the v8 build for some bedtime reading / xt envy https://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/165601-xtv8-build/?hl=swap This guy is nuts! In a good way.

  4. @JonOfScio post some pics man! My Subarus: my 1986 GL is named the baby lion and the 85 xt is named ghost. There is someone here with a really nice slammed black turbo one named the flying magpie, but he hasn't posted here in a long time. Most people have never seen a vintage xt in real life. I saw one once and was sure to get a pic! And I saw one in the junkyard once. Someone has a sweet xt6 in boulder, CO. The early ones have the flat rear bumper and looks way better than the 6 cyl. years.

  5. you know something that bothers me more than not having my wagon anymore? someone else getting the fame for doing absolutely nothing to the car, im the one that busted my butt for 9 months and after many cuts and bruises and a drill bit going all the way through my thumb after the cheap drill bit broke, a Wagon was reborn from the dead, then I sold it because the rust was just too much lol. atleast the car still exists. https://barnfinds.com/3700-obo-1979-subaru-4wd-wagon/

  6. many soobs will seep some fuel as they age - and it doesn't take much to smell strongly. tighten any fuel clamps you can find under the hood. there have been people with rusted filler pipes and cracked pump assemblies, etc. , but, start by looking around under the hood for drips or wetness on fuel system parts.

  7. Are you positive the ground on the intake manifold is clean and tight? It's the ground for the ecm. I've seen people (unnecessarily) remove the wiring harness from the intake manifold, so overlooking that ground can cause your problem. Do you smell raw fuel from the tailpipe after cranking it for a while?

  8. When I used to wrench on airplanes for a living pro tools were the usual buy (Snap On, MAC, Proto, maybe Craftsman). But now that I just tell people what to do to fix airplanes and only wrench on my car occasionally Harbor Freight or Kobalt from Lowe's is sufficient for my needs.

  9. Sure, any one person can choose to do that but it's incorrect as a statement - it's normative and commonplace to replace one bearing as there's no physical reason to replace a bearing that hasn't failed.

  10. Sure - we all have our parameters when it comes to this stuff, and if you're using the tools to make your living it's easier to justify buying primo product. For example, when it comes to electronic pliers, I absolutely won't touch anything but Snap-On because nobody else is even close e.g. I've been using their 710 flush cutters exclusively for nearly 40 years. When there was a (really) good used tool shop in town I bought as many Snap-On, Mac, etc. "mechanic's" hand tools as I could, because they generally charged 1/2 the new price. But if I can't find those deals, I don't have a lot of trouble with solid consumer-grade stuff, esp. Craftsman or others offering free replacement. It's the normal cost vs. quality vs. time calculus, and it constantly varies with application and circumstance.

  11. old name was Combination of GL and Loyale cause those were the cars I was rocking. Now I don't have any ea82 cars (except my XTs) My regular daily is my metallic green Forester, named Fergie. So FerGloyale

  14. P1325 is Knock Sensor Low Input. Very common for the knock sensors to fail. eBay has them for around $20. Spark plugs and wires would be first on the list. Check coolant level and look for any cloudiness or muddy appearance in the coolant. If it looks nasty then it probably needs to be changed. You can check fan operation by connecting the green plugs under the dash on the drivers side. Turn the key to On and the fans will start to cycle on and off in approximately 1 second intervals. Check that each fan runs at two speeds, low then high, then off. If one fan or one speed doesn't work check fuses and tap on the relays in the underhood fuse panel. If you feel each relay clicking off and on, but the fan does not work the fan motor may be dead.

  16. Thanks for the replies and confirmation. I suppose that means there are three different stages of EA71 then, early, middle and late!! Must be time for a Gen 2 5 speed for that fat case too!
