  1. After a ride in the ultrasonic cleaner, the parts looked much better. I found an old stock carb kit on ebay, which worked excellent. It didn't take long to run into a problem, of course. The original throttle plate assembly is messed up, the secondary is completely seized. I have a second EA61 carb for parts, but it is even rustier. So, I started digging around in my parts. I have this 1300g intake that I wanted to use, where I made my first discovery: the EA61 carb has a smaller bolt pattern than the EA62/63/71 carb. On the left, EA61, on the right, EA62. This is the late style gasket over the early manifold, definitely not compatible. On the left, EA61, on the right, EA71. I have a EA71 here for spares, and for fun, I pulled the carb to see if the throttle plates were any good. They move exactly as they should, thankfully. Even better, the carb base is the same size on both carbs, so I was able to simply bolt the EA71 base onto the EA61 body. The biggest difference is in the throttle plate size, though it's the secondary that is drastically larger. I won't know until I bolt it all up, but I think this will work. This is the completed franken carb. I did have to swap the linkage parts over onto the new baseplate, but it is all the same size and it was super easy. One more piece to the puzzle!

  2. When it refuses to start, do you have voltage where it needs to be? Eg: at the ECU power wires, ignition coil, do you get spark when turning it over when hot and not wanting to run? If you have spark does it try to fire up with some start ya bastard or aero start sprayed down the intake? Cheers Bennie

  3. I am sure that you know this, but WA can mean 2 places: WA = Washington State USA WA = Western Australia

  4. Hey Bennie! If there is a speed sensor on the back of the cluster, I didn't see it or see any connectors for it at all. Is it a part of the cluster itself? My speedo is just a cable going into the transmission above the right hand CV axle. The only reason I have went with the OEM cruise control is because I saw that my car had all the connections for it and what little I read indicated that it was 'plug and play'. I have tried cruise computers out of a 91 and a 93. Currently have the computer out of the 91 installed, so the exact year that my car is.

  5. The Legacy 6MT must be either a JDM or DownUnder (El Freddo?) option...I've not seen one in the US market. I'd make sure I have a reliable source for it and the DIY install. The '04+ STI 6MT is a much bigger and $$ swap. Otherwise, any 5-speed from a '97-'00 (maybe a couple years newer too) Subaru that was connected to the EJ25x should bolt up, and have the 4.11 to match your rear diff.

  6. There are two different types of six speed - one that’s a different design to the 5spd and is considered the “proper” six speed because of its strength. The other is a split case 5spd with a sixth gear built onto the back of it. If you’re after performance the proper six speed is the way to go. The best is from the STi from what I understand. As for what you need depending on what box you have, I’ll leave that up to those that are in the know. Cheers Bennie
