  1. Thanks for the tip. A friend here at work mentioned the same thing.. I'll stop on the way home..
  2. Hi Everyone- I have a 97 outback with about 25k on a rebuild, just turned 130K. It's been idling rough for a couple of weeks and got worse this AM. Seems fine on the freeway and when cold, just rough at the stop lights. This AM the check engine light came on. I suspect the O2 sensors or cat, but I see other threads on this subject that lead to many other parts. Is there a way to get the codes without a reader?? I know some cars will yeild the codes by turning the key on and off a number of times. Perhaps the suby with do the same?? Please advise.
  3. Tap it in clean, its a seal for a rotating shaft. It should press into the block nicely. Be careful not to score the crank getting the old one out. You'll be in where you should probably look at replacing the timing belt and water pump also. Unless you've just done them.. I suggest pulling the radiator and AC condensor and the grill so you can get to the seal and see what you're doing.. HTH..
  4. How about if you remove the timing belt cover on one head or the other and check the condition of the belt. They are good for about 60k miles. If you missed the last change (120k) it probably broke.. I've changed mine a few times. It's not fun, but you can do it.. Good luck
  5. Anyone know the alignment specs for a 97 Legacy outback. I need to get a ballpark to be able to drive it to the alignment shop. Really only need the Camber. Didn't change the other settings.. I just put in: new half shafts new wheel bearings new lower ball joints new struts steel braided brake lines... That weekened sucked.. BTW, if you have over 100k on your scuby, the OEM struts are toast. Get them replaced.!
  6. Here's the real test. Open the radiator cap, put some water in til full. Run the car for a while and look for bubbles in the coolant. If they smell like exhaust, you're done. Blown headgasket. Call CCR. I don't think that you want to tackle it in the car, not enough room. Pull the engine and put a rebuild in. I've been there and know.. Good Luck..
  7. Perhaps Subaru is an ad client of the chron. Money talks But the author is right, it's an ugly car. It reminds me of an Edsel from the front. And I've heard that described in very similar terms. Which makes me wonder: since it costs 10s of millions to tool up to make a new car, why are there any ugly cars. It doesn't make sense, all the approvals, red tape, etc. that have to be passed to get to the point where you build a production car. Doesn't someone at a car manufacturer (besides ferrari, posche, lambo.. ) have any sense of asthetics? Most cars on the road today are pitiful, and there is no excuse. It costs the same to make a stylish car as an ugly one. What the h*** are they thinking??? Oh well..
  8. Hi Guys- THanks for the replies. Just for the record ( I called the dealer on this one ) the spindle nut socket is 1 1/4, go figure. It fit perfect and is easier to find than the 36 mm. Everything came apart pretty easy, but I found that my wheel bearings are the culprit. Since they are pressed in, I'm taking the assemblies to the dealer to get new ones pressed in. The pin on the passenger side is a pain to get to. I need to go buy an 8" punch to reach it, cause the cat is in the way below. Since it's all apart, I was thinking of replacing the front struts. Any suggestions on good ride/handling replacements?? TIA.
  9. This is really dangerous, I hesitate to recommend it. but as a last resort. Just make sure that your engine spins clockwise.. Disconnect your plug wires so it cannot start.. Put the biggest breaker bar and the proper socket on the crank bolt and wedge it into the frame rotated as far clockwise as it can go.. Then use the starter to bust it loose. Just a quick pop with the key is all it takes. I have successfully used this on my suby, my sons acura and an old chrysler.. BE CAREFUL.. HTH..
  10. I have a 97 Legacy Outback, that is making noises like the cv joints are going.. I got some new half-shafts, but due to laziness have not put them in yet. Can anyone offer any pointers, Tool required etc? I will probably have to buy a socket for the axle nut, but don't know what size. I've done this sort of job before on other cars, so I have an idea of what I am in for, just looking for some info.. TIA
