  1. Good info guys, Yeah I defiantly avoid "jack-rabbiting" the thing. To the guy that asked I do drive a manual. Basically I just wanted to know if it was okay to WOT it if I was already moving at a normal clip i.e. 40 mph to get onto the highway onramp or w/e. But from what I read I’ve concluded that it’s no real problem just get regular oil changes and don’t expect amazing gas mileage.
  2. I rarely drive with the accelerator fully pressed, just have some weird feeling that I am getting worse gas mileage and wearing the engine more. I have read that at WOT your engine is at its maximum intake for air/fuel so I can figure that more fuel = less gas mileage, also with the added acceleration I'm guessing that would hurt mileage a bit as well, but with this is there any added engine wear or is it all in my head? (no I'm not drag racing, I just like to have a comfortable level of acceleration in my 137hp ej22)
  3. Yeah I'm taking it in friday and decided I'm doing the waterpump. I mean its 10 years old anyways, why not?
  4. Yes its original timing. A lot of people are on the fence about the WP/TB issue... Some say change it with timing belt, others say I could wait till say 150k miles, so i really dont know.
  5. I'm talking to the auto shop and here is what I'm considering. My car is a 97 Impreza w/ 79k miles. - Oil Change + New Oil Filter - Alightnment/Rotation - New Timing Belt - New Water Pump - Replace Cam + Crank Seals - Reseal Oil Pump Is any of this overkill? And am I missing anything? Because I don't want to change anything I don't need to. However I don't want to leave something out and have to end up taking it right back in if I have a problem. Thanks!
  6. Thanks, Yeah I figured it would be due for a new belt around now, just making sure. So replacing the cam & crank seals and resealing the oil pump would be considered normal when talking about a 10 year old car with almost 80k miles on it? I'm assuming the theory being some parts will wear down on a similar timescale, is there be anything else I should be concerned with replacing?
  7. Hey guys, I have a 97' Impreza with 78.5k miles and the timing belt has never been changed... I have heard some owners change belts at around 80k, however do to the nature of my car being about 10 years old I'm wondering if I should be nervous and change my belt asap, any recommendations?
  8. I drive a 97 subaru impreza 2.2 5 speed and lately it has been idling well above 1200 rpms, if I let it sit for a few seconds it might go down 100 rpms but overall I think this is higher then it should be. Any ideas? Also I really need to push my lower gears to get any good acceleration out of the thing, would it be normal to shift 1st and 2nd at 4500 or 5000 rpms or should I not push the thing that hard? Basicly I want the best gas milage and have my engine last as long as possible but I dont know if shifting gears that high regularly would hurt more then if I always shifted at say 3000. Thanks.
  9. I have the 97' impreza 5 speed with the 2.2l and love it to death, at 76k miles I'm having no problems and its running great, and at 23-24 mpg around town the mileage aint bad. I've herd the 2.2l mileage is about the same as the 1.8l (you might get 1 more mpg on the 1.8's but w/e) However with any used manual transmission car try and see if the last owner took good care of the transmission.
  10. Thanks for the help guys! rofl@the 120+ mph pic, it certainly eases my mind a bit. sorry about the car though hope you get her fixed up soon.
  11. Thanks for the reply Adnan! Makes a lot of sense, after 2nd thought I realized I normally shift 2500-3000, 4000 is a bit of a stretch when talking about my "normal" driving. I do have a follow up on my 95 MPH highway question though. Today I was doing about that and as I gently hit the breaks to slow down a little for the exit, but the brakes sort of "rumbled" I was concerned so I tried to do it as gently as possible but the rumble continued to the stop at the light. After I accelerated from the light I didn't have any problem and the brakes were fine. Just wondering what exactly was going on there and whether or not I should look into something with my brakes.
  12. Hi my names Josh and im new to the forum here. This looked like a good friendly place for subaru owners and figured I would join up. Anyways I own a 97' 2.2l Subaru Impreza 5 speed with about 72,500 miles. Love the car to death. Boxer engine, AWD, low center of gravity all features I'm sure most Subaru owners have come to love. However I have a few questions regarding my driving, I more or less have two conflicting attitudes towards driving, first being my love for driving somewhat sporty, more or less the "fun" aspect of driving. The second being concern for the car hoping I get the most life out of it. I acquired the car used and have driven roughly 1,500 miles so far, I know the previous owner took excellent care of the vechical. I generally shift somewhere between 3,000 - 4,000 rpms but at times have seen myself going as high as 5,000 - 6,000 (I would NEVER redline) would shifting in this sporty fashion ware the engine more? Also on the highway I HAVE taken the car to I believe 95 MPH, This is not something I like doing and have only taken it that high once or twice my question is whether or not this would do any car damage. Don't get me wrong I'm normally a very conservative driver, just on rare occasions I sometimes get excited in driving such a fun little car. Maybe I'm just being paranoid but hey... I love this car and want to keep it running nice for as long as I can. Anyone with the knowledge care to enlighten me? Thanks.
