  1. Somewhere outside Brisbane a collector bought three XTs off a friend. The AWD turbo auto one was in storage in Brisbane 15 years then sold to Sydney then sold on again a further 300 km south being trailered each time. For its return trip it drove on a permit some 1200 km and didntdidn't miss a beat. Keep an eye out for them. Plans were for red interior and chrome body wrap exexterior !
  2. Just what, when and where is this O2 monitor lamp the factory manuals speak of in diagnostics 2-7 p44 of XT at least? Is this the red LED of the ECU itself not a dash light?
  3. Actually was thinking of the bottom of a piston which is why I used the word 'skirt' - but not much of a skirt on our pistons
  4. No, not me ...well my mate who does not get out much...can't keep his tongue in his mouth, cant believe so many attractive women would have any reason to be in a hardware joint at all !!
  5. I did think of the plumbing aisle when the 90mm drain pipe came to mind... You have me on the crank protrude too far for a piston to work though GD ....
  6. gotta give you bearing replacer guys a slap on the back for your efforts. I once tried the budget method of replacing the timing belt idlers bearing but it ended up off square somehow and had a nasty wobble to it...yet to try again, possibly when I discover kits coming in with Chinese bearings I suppose
  7. I am trying to recall where the jets are in the bottom of the fuel float bowl on these hitachi carbs. If they are rear ward of the chamber and you are facing uphill AND you have junk in the float bowl the fuel suck can draw the crap towards the jets and block them but not usually at idle. Sounds like a good offer from GD
  8. working on the comparison - remotely - I have one set of manuals, then I got Greg the Guru with his set of manuals eh Greg the short wire run from rectangular white plug of females out of the base of the distributor to the round black connector may hold the differences
  9. think I recall there is a difference in clearance of manifolds between EA82 and EA81 and think I had to remove material from the underside of the spfi inlet manifold to clear the EA81 block. In the middle section. So when you place untouched spfi inlet on the EA81 heads it may not sit flush on the heads mating surfaces both sides until some weight is shed
  10. GD does a guide that is complimentary to anything EA82? I am watching this thread Our market never got spfi Subaru of any kInd but I did the intake swap to make use of the fuelie throttle body to mount an Impco propane mixer. Very successful result. I then started to make one suit EA82 turbo components on EA81...shelved any EA81 activity for a while though You .may need to modify coolant hose outlets near distributor. GD likely covered this for you. I used 1/8 taper tap, 8 mm drill bit and numerous brass bits to get goodfunctional results b
  11. Basic rule of thumb...if the engine is a dinosaur, lubricate it with a dinosaur ! I thought ATF was a synthetic anyway , a hydraulic type of 'oil' that washes away with a little water
  12. EA82 seemed to go their first optical distributor in 1987 with the XT. Was it only the turbo variant that got it in this year? In fact were there non turbo EA82 mpfi anything that got them in 1987? In our market in Oz the 1988 onwards EA82 mpfi got the optical distributor whether XT or Leone or L wagon ...touring wagon only I think. But these 88 onwards distributors gets a new part number. 22100AA410 for 1987 then 22100AA450 for ,88 onwards Not directly interchangeable it is said - unless swap two wires. But which two? Previously someone said swap green and white wire positions with each other Another has said black and white Now doubt second option as black wire connects to a male spade terminal in the distributor base at the module and this spade has a side bit that is connected to distributors body ie earth Not changing that ! Looking at distributors with no wires coming from base at all revealing 2+2 .male spade plug of optical module.... If module is same for the two part numbers they MUST be interchangeable without any wiring swap so long as all the wiring is retained right up to the white female spade 2+2 terminal that plugs into the module and held there by a screwed plate..surely ??
  13. it will be a case of randomly looking or do you have gumtree in the US yet ? It has a wanted to buy section and worked for me chasing something, though the want ad for an attractive, tall, brunette independently wealthy female with a BMI of 25 has not come to fruition
  14. if friend has original Hitachi carb on it and has solenoid screwed in the upper section, just give it 12V off ignition and see if that fixes his problem
  15. check, lube or replace the speedo cable is the easier option of my two suggestions. The second involves getting speedo head out and checking how clean or gunked up its little cogs are and find a white lithium grease (if you did not chuck it out Jono ! ) to apply to the small white nylon cogs and shafts
  16. would be a valuable learning for us all for someone to do this to a donor vehicle to then do an autopsy on all electrical components
  17. Wondering if the DOJs fell out then settled back in taking account of fact the camber kit allows up extra 14 mm each side .right be dreaming DOJ out ??
  18. but it was tar and had just gone over a 20 KPH speed bump at about stop or 10 KPH, came and went, came and went within 200 metres just looked at wheels and tyres - look OK recent work has been shimming the caster bar to correct for the camber kit in the Brumby and today - well , this is BLISS The brake pedal squeak that returned after a decade or more on this pedal box, pulled pedal box apart to encase the brake pedal spring in rubber tube where its inside sat on the outside of the pedals tube and greased it all up - then adjusted brake light switch to activate it sooner than it had but as for this weird thing, felt as if I'd run over a thick slippery snake ??
  19. did you need to space between any mounts or cross members to fit the EJ22 and clear the underside of the bonnet ? Looks very clean and tidy Does the bonnet release work ? I'd love to see a pic of the EJ in the engine bay ....
  20. Although not really built to sustained high revs with only three main bearings I drove mine like it loved to rev so rev the ring out if it in held second below Drive when going up this hills and just hang on and concentrate on road safety and engine temps
  21. Think only the turbo models had this u channel shaped heat shield along the bottom where exhaust pipe was just a bit below
  22. A proper measure would be to tolerate it until temp gauge suggests it is at operating temp as that is where it will be used most then see if happy with idle speed and engine behaviour and drivability Work backwards from there. You could check with face book crowd and be told to fit a Weber It may help if carb is spotlessly clean outside so you can inspect for worn out linkages or holes linkages connect to ...
  23. There is no non metal parts in our hydraulic lifters ...I thought there were rubber Vinton seals or such. I have a set of Mizpahs reconditioned units and they won't even tick when gauge pressure drops to zero! Too such oil over the level mark can cause aeration of engine oil. Does a change of oil help? Use a pre drop cleaner first
  24. Any old silicon type both sides of gasket let set for a day and maybe use a torque wrench as well as check flat and squareness as said above. I love factory gaskets for the turbo engine in this location. Look for black sooty deposits for the leak
