  1. Hahaha, well, to call me a procrastinator would be an understatement. I have to get a new temporary tag for it and tow it to school. It's got new timing belts and tensioner spring, but now it's not getting spark. Hopefully I'll at least be able to diagnose it this week. The damn car needed A LOT more work than I thought it would.
  2. I like that idea...I just have no idea where that is. Where is that? Thunderhill is fun, by the way. Took my WRX there in January for a track day and in May for a Rally-X. Might be there again in September too.
  3. Someone chose a place for our little meeting. I haven't lived here long enough to know my way around. If you guys don't pick somewhere, this will never happen.
  4. Yep, thanks for asking. New timing belts are on thanks to the tools and assistance of NuclearBacon. The whole procedure went surprisingly well, and everything is now back together. I compared the new tensioner spring with the old one, and the old one was definitely VERY stretched out (maybe 1/4" longer than the replacement). We attempted to start it, but the ignition coil wasn't doing its job. I picked up a new one at Pick 'N Pull this afternoon, so I'll try it tomorrow. Wish me luck. Thanks again, Luigi! I owe ya one!
  5. Yeah, I agree that it should be an old school meet, but I don't see any reason to count out Legacies. All the local meets seem to be Impreza only, so poor Legacy drivers never get any love. I'd really better get the GL running for this thing because if I don't have it, my only other mode of transportation is an Impreza. :-\ I'm pretty new to the area, so I'm not sure where to hold this get together. When I lived in Colorado, we had a USMB meet at a restaurant and all sat around and talked for a while. It was a lot of fun, and way better than just standing around in a parking lot. It seems like a lot of the members are scattered around, so perhaps we should have the meet somewhere between Sacramento and the Bay Area. I'm not really sure where that'd put us...Vacaville? I dunno. I need you guys to help me brainstorm. Let's shoot for about 3 weeks from now on a Sunday so almost everyone can make it. August 28th will give us enough time to plan and give everyone some advance notice. Edit: 1986 GL-10 sedan. Doesn't run.
  6. This thread is mainly to see what sort of response I get. If you guys are up for some sort of get together within the next month or so, post up with ideas. I'll update the thread when we come up with a more concrete plan.
  7. Eh, I don't like kids much anyway. Never let me around your kids when I have a prybar handy. I might make them help me adjust the belt tension in my Suby.
  8. That package was from you?! I got a notice on my door from FedEx and I was wondering who it was from, but unfortunately, I got home too late to go pick it up. I'll go get it tomorrow though. WOOHOO! Thank you soooo much! You just saved me a ton of time getting one from the junk yard. For the record, guys, CCR rocks.
  9. Woohoo! USMB meet! That'd be awesome, we should definitely do that. I also had minimal timing belt experience before I tackled this job. I had only installed timing belts on engines that were out of the car. It's actually a lot easier than I thought it would be, this car is just FILTHY. The whole undercarriage is covered in thick black grease, everything is leaking and the car is infested with ants and spiders from being parked under a tree. Tomorrow I'm going to try to pick up a can or 10 of Raid and some engine degreaser. Yuck.
  10. Wow, thanks for all the help, guys. I spoke with one of my friends who rents out space in the building the car is parked at. He's good friends with the landlord and said that the guy won't do anything but bug him to move it, so thankfully the car isn't in immediate danger like I thought it was. The tags that are on the car expired in '00 though, so I can't park it on the street if it comes down to it. As for the timing belt thing, the car is already dismantled. I made the mistake of taking off the tensioner, and now I have no idea how I'm going to get it back on. The spring is all stretched out and either needs to be bent back into shape or replaced. I'd bend it, but I don't have any pliers. I have a socket set and some wrenches, and a 22mm socket with a 1/2" drive ratchet and a giant pipe for crank pulley purposes, but that's about it. I really need to hunt down a prybar in order to get the belts back in. I don't even have a flat head screwdriver. This is going to get expensive, I can tell already. Luigi, I got your message from Will. Thanks a lot for the offer to help, there's a good chance I'll take you up on it...especially if you have a prybar. Are you busy Sunday? I'll PM you my number.
  11. I know, Emily, I know! I've been wanting to call you guys all week, but by the time I'm out of school, you guys are loooong gone from the shop. I'll try to call you tomorrow morning before class. I've got a couple more ideas, but I could use Rick's input too. By the way, thanks for the parts. My car is full of packing peanuts now.
  12. Yeah, I suppose I should peek behind the timing covers and see what's going on back there, but since the car has been hanging out under a tree, it's infiested with spiders. Ughhh.... I forgot to add that I did a compression test and it had good compression on all cylinders but number 3 (I think). I can't remember what exactly the compression was since it's been a few months, but it was low and I didn't think much of it since the car has been sitting for so long. By the way, if anyone wants the car, it's theirs for $500 and whatever it costs to tow it. Edit: I have no clue where Oceanview Blvd. is.
  13. I'm going to bump this thread instead of starting a new one. I haven't gotten the car running yet and I can't figure out what the hell is wrong with it. I've been extremely busy lately and haven't had much time to work on it, but I'm being told I have one week to get the thing GONE, so I need to get crackin'. I'm starting to run out of ideas to get it running though, so I've decided to turn to the experts. So far I've replaced the following: Fuel filter Plugs Wires Cap Rotor Air filter Valve cover gaskets Battery Fuel pump The car cranks and stumbles, but still won't fire up. It turns over just fine by hand, and the timing has been set correctly. When I spray carb cleaner in the intake, the car still won't start, and when I changed the plugs, the old ones were sorta fouled from cranking the car so much, so it's definitely getting fuel. When I changed the fuel pump, I leaked old gas all over myself and the parking lot, so most of the old gas is gone, although there's still some old gas mixed in with about 2 gallons of fresh 91 octane. I'm running out of ideas, but I'm going to go check the coil and see if it's any good. That's my last hope though, so if that doesn't work, I'm really going to be depending on you guys for ideas.
  14. My friend had the same idea and posted it on another forum. I love the idea, and I'd definitely, absolutely, 100% drive one if Subaru decided to make it. Here's the link to my friend's thread: http://www.awdpirates.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=63461#63461 It really reminds me of a Holden Ute SS.
  15. Emily told me that you guys were posting rave reviews of that Sea Foam stuff. I've gotta find me some of that, and give it a shot. I'll try it, then post up the results once I actually get the car registered. Thanks guys.
  16. I called up CCR this morning and talked to Rick and Emily. They suggested that it might be the rings siezed in the piston, and to try filling up on premium and driving the car around for 50-60 miles since it hasn't been driven in 3 years, then check the compression again. I already returned the compression tester to the friend who loaned it out to me, so I can't do a wet test right away, but I've pretty much decided to drive the car as is for the time being.
  17. Carfax is clean, the car is already mine and it's in really nice condition. I don't think I have anything to be careful of, I doubt the car will bite. What I'd really like to do is "CCR" it myself (hey Emily, I made a new verb!), but I don't have the equipment readily available in my apartment parking lot, unfortunately.
  18. The $200 GL-10 that "only needed a thermostat" apparently needs much more than I had initially thought. I bought a new battery, and tried to start her up for the first time in 3 years, but much to my dismay, she was entirely out of gas. Cranked over just fine though, and definitely wanted to start. I'll hunt down a gas can tomorrow and see what can be done. I also took advantage of the shiny new battery, and did a compression test. It read 120-122 PSI in 3 cylinders, and 44 PSI in number 3. I need to find somewhere/someone to do a leak down test, but until then, I'm weighing my options. At this point, it's between 1) Sucking it up, doing a tune-up and driving it as-is, 2) Finding a junk yard engine whenever I get the cash, or 3) Saving up and having it CCR'ed. I'm leaning toward option number one, although I'm not sure if the car will pass smog. This thread was more a rant than anything, but I'm curious as to what you guys would do in this situation. The car is so pretty, I just wish I could drive it already.
  19. Yay, it's finally mine, the title is sitting right in front of me. She said, "oh, I looked it up and the thing it needs isn't for the speedometer, it's a thermostat." Simple enough. I'm so excited, I can't wait to get this thing up and running again. I love cleaning cars, I'd rather detail it myself. Not that it really needs it, the inside is really clean, it just needs some wax.
  20. It will be mine in an hour and a half! $200, and all it needs is a speedo gear, tune up and some tires! The woman who owns it seems extremely nice, and was willing to part with it without any hassle at all. Now I need to accumulate the following parts (coughEmilycough): air filter fuel filter plugs wires valve cover gaskets speedo gear battery front right corner light Anything else you guys can think of? I'm sure it'll need some new, clean gas too. I've never brought a car back from the dead before.
  21. If the complex were really bad, I wouldn't have moved here, trust me. It's a well maintained building, cool neighbors and management, and it's right next door to the police station and court house. The only thing that needs improvement is the parking lot, and honestly, I couldn't care less if people don't register their cars. Thanks for your input.
  22. She lives in my complex! The manager is calling her for me, so now I'm just praying that she'll sell it. I'm excited!
  23. A friend's father ran the plates today. I have the name of the owner, but there was no address, so the next step is to track her down. This had better pay off because it's getting complicated.
  24. My friend is having a key made for me, he said he'd try to get it for me by the middle of next week. Meanwhile, I got this info: That's a lot of miles, but I still want the car. I'm dedicated...or something.
  25. I think I'm going to try, but I have a feeling they'll want to verify that I'm the owner. I might just call my friend in Colorado and see if he can have one made for me at the dealership out there.
