  1. Hi All, My ace mechanic in Idaho has a standard answer: Subies just don't like additives. But, hey - he's been a Subie guy since the dawn of time. I'm the second owner of my '96 Legacy - and He cautioned me against the synthetic oil in older engine. Something to do with seals. Anyhoo, not much help, I know, but just another opinion.
  2. My '96 Legacy does this. My ace mechanic said it was reporting that the (pardon my non-tech language) thing that helps cool exhaust before it recirculates wasn't doing that. Not true, though! The thingie was working, just reporting wrong. I live with it. The Check Engine light goes off when this error is reset, or, most times, just whenever it feels like it. Best, RubyBlue
  3. Yahooo! Turns out the rubber around the glass roof was dry, catching on a part of the roof. Just pushed down at the center of glass (back) when sliding glass was closed, head a "pop", uncaught...and retracts just like new. Thanks for letting me pick your brains...and glad I didn't send letter yet to Subaru. Beer-thirty! Drinks on me, all.
  4. What a good idea! Writing Subaru this evening. Hope Subaru has the same customer service attitude that Toyota had 10 years ago! Your thoughtful reply is greatly appreciated.
  5. Ooooh, I hope so! Sometimes it's just the little things, eh? I'll give it a go, wish luck.
  6. Thanks all. (BTW, I thought this WAS the New Generation of Subarus. My apologies.) It used to work fine. Then, one day, it didn't want to retract. I opened and closed the flipper, and released the switch just before it closed tight, and tried the retracting switch again. Doing this several times, the retractor finally opened. It now takes longer to "find" that "spot" where the retractor finally opens. Yes, I've lubed (with Tri-Flow, a silicon based lubricant) and WD-40 too. It doesn't appear to be "stuck," it just can't find that one spot that brings the flipper all the way down and then retracts back. I will look into the control thing (junk yard time) and the switch as well. I'm on the Central Oregon Coast. Newport, Lincoln City area. Thanks, and
  7. Howdy, All: 96 Legacy, 4D, power everything. Sunroof either flips up, or can be retracted to fully open. Flip up working. Retraction only "catches" once in a while. Motor works fine, because it moves back and forth ok when it decides to "catch" and open. Neighbor said his car (non-Subie) just needed new cables. Dealership told me Subies need to replace the whole unit. Rats. Any other options open to me? Can't afford a new one at over $600! Thanks for any help.
  8. Thanks for being here. My Subie is a '96 Legacy, 4D, with almost everything. (Not the Traction option). She drives like a dream, and I love her. However, while the sunroof flips up alright, I can only get the retraction to "catch" every once in a while. Reminds me of a dying cylinoid (sp?) on my old Volksy. Anyway, my neighbor advised that it probably isn't the motor, as the dealership suggested, but the cables, which he replaced in his (non-Subaru) car for about a hundred bucks. So, local dealer said no go - had to buy a whole new unit for around SIX HUNDRED bucks! Rats. Any other solutions? I can't do a new one. Thanks for any help.
