  1. From front range of Colorado, a popular Subaru area, It has ~150k miles, body in good shape, runs well but needs: head gasket--coolant leaks out slowly cv boot on passenger front new windshield Should I just put an ad in the paper? Sell it for parts? Anybody have an idea how much? THanks.
  2. The car is in good condition, if I fixed it I could drive it to 200K probably. What would it be worth b/f the repairs?
  3. My 92 Loyale needs a head gasket and cv boot on front side, new windshield. 145K miles on it. That's probably $1400 worth of work. I am planning to get a new car here in the near future (I'd like to get a 2005 Outback but can't wait 6 mos.) I don't know what to do about the loyale. if I put the $$$ into it to fix it, would I be able to get it back on the sale? Any thoughts? THX for the help.
  4. 96 Legacy wagon, 5 speed, 102K miles. The gears grind when downshifting to 4th & 3rd-which I do a lot of in Colorado! They also grind sometimes shifting from 3rd to 4th. These are not horrible grinds but you can hear & feel them. 2 different repair places have offered possible solutions. First is to drain out all old tranny fluid & replace it with slippery stuff called "syncro shift", and leave it there. Cost is ~$130.00. 2nd option is from the other repair shop and they'll put in some sort of fluid, I drive around for 500 miles or so & then they drain & replace w/ new tranny fluid. Cost ~$40. Anybody deal with this? THX
  5. I need a new car. I actually prefer the look of the Outback. However, the Forester is a bit cheaper AND has side airbags, the OB does not. Why do they make these 2 models anyway? It seems like they just cannabalize (sp?) each other's sales anyway. Yes I know the Forester has some different dimensions and is a bit smaller. Is it noticeable? I have a kid & need a bigger car, not a smaller one.
  6. So, is the new Outback more "refined" and less "sport utility" like? Will I want to take it off road or load it up with camping gear, etc? Or has it gone fancy? Has the Forrester essentially replaced the Outback as we know it?
  7. I need a new car & would prob. get an Outback wagon. However, I see that the Outback will be radically changed for '05. It will be bigger I hear? Anything else? It would be nice if it is a little bigger, but of course that prob. means more $$$ too. I am wondering if anybody knows when the '05s will be out, and what the changes will be. I'd hate to spend $$$ on an 04 if the model will change. If the changes are not for the better, maybe I need to get an '04.
  8. Can I get this "split boot" at any auto parts store? Or, does Subaru make one? My joints are fine I think, the shop just says, replace those boots soon, they are cracking. How does a split boot keep the joint clean? Bow does it seal? THX
  9. It costs a lot to replace the boots at my shop. Is there an easy way to deal with this, like do it yourself? I am not a mechanic nor do I have extensive tools. I don't know what's involved. This is for a '92 Loyale 4WD wagon. THX
  10. My 92 loyale has 145K miles. Apparently it needs a new head gasket, it is leaking coolant. It will overheat if I don't keep the coolant filled up. My reliable repair shop says it will cost around $1000 to fix, they have to pull the engine, etc. Is this right? They say it is an engine "reseal job". I am disappointed about the supposed long life of subarus, and lack of long life on my loyale. My older 82 wagon went for 188K miles, no head gasket problem. I was thinking about getting a new Outback. Should I drop the $$ on this job? THX
