  1. I've only done 1 set on my ea81, but it was a pain. Helps to have the hub completely disassembled and off of the car, and some kind of vice or press is really nice to have. Other than that I cant really tell you much about procedure. Make sure you pack it good, what I usually do for bearings of that type is get a good ziplock bag, fill it with grease of choice and massage it in; doesnt get grease everywhere and does a good job. Good luck
  2. yeah I wouldnt get an ea82t w/ an auto for going up to the mountain. If it were me I'd hold out for an ea81 4spd d/r for going up to the mountain. Its no powerhouse and it really will sound like a plane taking off going up some of those hills, but compared to the other vehicles I'd regularly drive up there the subaru would do the best as far as reliability and handling in the snow. They also seem to be a tougher engine as far as overheating goes, I've had both my wagons runnin so hot I couldnt drive either much faster than 3-5mph before it cooled down a bit and have never blown a headgasket. Although the transmission is a differant story, the 4spd can take some abuse but my experiance is they cant handle long periods of extreme heat, strain and shock but that shouldnt be a problem for driving around. I've seriously abused both my wagons, the transmissions in both are the weak points and they still drive fine. blew up 3rd gear synchro and some teath on the cogs for 2nd gear, and toasted what sounded like a bearing for the reverse gears the other day in my daily driver and it still runs and drives just fine(binds up a slight amount when coasting in reverse), albeit a bit noisy. a fuel inject n/a 5spd ea82 would be awesome, I've had carb problems with all of my cars up that high.
  3. Check a hardware store, take some measurements... find something that fits.
  4. It could also have already been damaged when you got it but just took a bit of runnin around to work it loose. Did you grease either of the joints up when you got it? the DOJ could have been dry and somewhat seized up putting a little bit of extra strain on the CV? That is kinda weird.
  5. man I'm jealous... you got mud snow and the color ea81 I really like. Nice wagon, I had an 81 that color which is now the beast, wish I had another one that was mostly stock. Shoot, I wish I could legally drive right now
  6. gotta get some tires that really chew up the ground and throw mud everywhere with horrible traction and that stick out past your fenders if ya wanna get dirty Nah actually its pretty hard to get subarus dirty in my experiance compared to other vehicles. That pic was a day or so after wcss8... but even my lifted wagon I have a hard time getting dirty at all. Big tires + high void ratio, low torque and high gearing makes it tough to throw mud everywhere. Nice wagon.
  7. was it a reman'd axle? It's my guess that it was and whoever rebuilt it didnt put the little circlip back on that goes on the end of the shaft that holds it in the joint. Thats all I can think of without any kind of pictures or better description, even for a reman'd axle I dont see any reason for it to fail so fast even if you drive your car like I drive mine.
  8. box in the sides and it will probably be plenty strong.... how you plan on attaching it with the center of the blocks like that? thats the biggest issue I can see. As a rule of thumb if your just using rectangular tubing we use 1/4" thick steel for most of the blocks that have any strain whatsoever put on them, but thinner metal can be used if engineered right. To have a good lift the cost of it is going to come from sheer amount of material or time spent engineering it or a mix of the two.
  9. should fix your wagon and invite him to go wheeling with you and yeah, kinda cool for a brat to be in a cartoon... but I dont think it was meant to be a good thing :-\
  10. um... maybe build longer control arms and clock the torsion bar and drop the diff? or drop the entire torsion rump roast'y and move it forward with longer control arms?
  11. ok so I guess your 4wd doesnt work... I dont know anything about how the system works but try to find the mechanism that engages the 4wd, should be near the back of the transmission and trace wires/vacuum lines back from there.
  12. anyone have any pics of the ea71 rear suspension?
  13. ok so how about some discussion... anyways I dont know anything about gen1 brats or wagons so I cant really help out that much but if someone would like to tell me/post some pictures of the problem maybe I could help?
  14. . Radiator lines will need some work, I found I could just modify the lower one but the top one I replace with some of the flexible heater hose stuff. as far as hoses to the heater core go I dont remember having to replace those. Steering shaft and brakelines are the big things, along with rear shocks and I'm sure you know you need strut top extensions or something for similar effect to gain any lift... they will need to be offset to regain correct camber. You will need to play with/modify the shifter and 4wd linkages significantly.
  15. ok be nice here... he said NO! either in response that offended him that made him feel like lashing out at your or he said NO! like he was trying to alert you to avoiding doing that if at all possible. I'm sure he was being the latter. These are forums, everybody reads them, please dont flame other people, especially needlessly... especially mods(not that they are better than anybody else but they do moderate these boards). Sorry if this post is out of place but i kinda feel like I needed to say this, if it made any sense cause I've been up since 3am and have to be at work in 6 hours. rather than call him an @ss, you should ask him why or say oh darn, I just F***ed up my wheelbearings, thats why you shouldnt do that.
  16. COOL... I've always wanted a set of lights similar, cept the kind that can be hidden behind the front grill... so I can have some fun with all the *********************s that think they're better than my ea81 on the highway at night :-D
  17. but a bigger battery = more power. depends on what you want. Honestly I'd go with as big a battery as will fit as long as it isnt TOO heavy.
  18. if your getting air to one side or the other you may not have to pull the dash. pull the vent peice that goes from the center heatercore section of the vent system to the passanger side defroster and clear out what you can, while you're at it you might as well pull the portion coming from the blower motor while you're at it and clean that out if it needs it. You will need to remove the plastic shelf part of the dash beneath the glovebox to get to those. If those are clear... well come back, you may be looking at pull the dash but maybe i'll think of something else till then. it took me 2 days to pull the dash in my 84 wagon, although that has a bit more wiring i believe than an 82 but all the same, its a b****.
  19. I dont know about up there but down here you can get in major trouble for less than that for "impersonating a police officer." friend of mine got nailed for painting his front running lights blue on his cadilac and having a spotlight on the a pillar. Looks cool though I'd get some covers on those lights for driving around on the street.
  20. i've heard brakefluid is a great rust inhibitor and also helps unseize engines....
  21. probably mice nest in the passanger side vent. any nasty smells in the car? if so a couple mice probably died in your vents.
  22. for some kinds of driving its normal for a subaru to get as low as 20... with my weber if i drive hard I can get it low 14s(mpg not 1/4mile ) but usually with the typical mix of city and highway driving and a fair amount of rough driving i usually get 22-23... had it as high as 29 once on flat highway with nothing in the car. But it does sound like you should be getting better than 18
  23. how do you drive it, ie mostly city or highway? many stops or almost no stops till you turn it off? what rpm range do you usually keep it in? how much stuff do you haul around in your car? what type of tires, check your alignment? etc... do you give it a couple minute for it to warm up before you drive it in cold weather? do you let it cool down for a little bit after driving it before you shut it off?
  24. ea71 in a hatch isnt exactly a completely differant animal, but there is a huge differance between a 4wd ea81 wagon and a 2wd ea71 hatch. my wagon on a good day gets 25-27 with the weber... my 86 std hatch easily gets 35mpg with some rough driving, easily 40 if I'm taking it easy. A wagon is heavier, has a slightly bigger engine, and has 4wd, all of which contribute to more fuel consumption.
