  1. I have noticed the similarities (I also have a VW bug) and have wondered how long an EA81 would last without a cooling system if the heads had cooling fins, and a big fan like the aircooleds.
  2. I once purchased an aftermarket lifetime warranty alternator from Sucks for $99 and it failed within two weeks. I took it back, Sucks tested it and told me it was fine. I was in disbelief. They told me I installed it wrong (I believe you would actually have to TRY HARD to install an alternator incorrectly) or that I had a bad ground somewhere. So, I took the car to Smart Service here in Seattle. They said the alternator was bad. I took it back to Sucks, and they said it was fine. BS!!! I had Smart replace the two week old alternator (they kept it for a "core") and it had run fine ever since (2+ years). Good alternator my a$$. That thing was a peice of ***************. I'm not sure where Smart Service gets theirs from, but I reccommend them. I paid a hundred bucks for a "Lifetime pain in the a$$". On a side note, not only was the alternator from Sucks a total peice of manure, but the people there were total morons. They also tried to tell me there was an external voltage regulator on the car - an 88 wagon - and that maybe that was the issue. The guy at Smart Service showed me where the voltage regulator was in the alternator. Jordan
  3. Mike, do you have a photo of how your car looks now? I have a 93 legacy wagon too, and it needs struts. I would love an extra 1.5", depending on how it looks. I don't really want the legacy to "look lifted". I'll save that for my 84 GL.
  4. I know a lot of the lube joints make that claim. I can see long term benefits, ie, less wear on the internals = better effeciency. My question: I'm runnnig 10W-40 dino Penzoil. Any problems with that? I usually change every 3K regardless of the conditions.
  5. I'm betting they did disconnect them. If you were hit hard enough, they likely removed the radiator to do some work, and out comes the fan too. No offense to body shop employees/owners, but many of them are snakey. Request a itemized bill from them (or the insurance company) and it may be on there. Good luck, that's BS.
  6. I have a 93 Legacy wagon that leaks PS fluid - about 1/2 quart a year. As an added bonus, it leaks right on top of my cat, producing a nice burning smell that eventually accumulates in the car. Smart Service quoted me over 500 bucks to repair it. It would require replacing the whole steering rack, and they're not so cheap nor is Smart's labor (though its quality stuff). So far, I've opted for the 1/2 pint of fluid every year. Maybe when my cohones begin to swell, I'll get a reman'd rack and go to town. I think I'll tackle that manual rack on the EA81 first.
  7. No offense, but if you think you're going to get anythign out of this (particularly an STI) other than your car back, you're living in a dream world. The dealer is responsible for nothing more than your vehicle's value, IF THAT. In many cases, they aren't responsible for your vehicle or its contents if its lost or stolen, and you probably signed a wavier stating something similiar to that. At the very least, I'm guessing there are signs posted everywhere that clearly state they are not responsible if your vehicle is lost or stolen. Bottom line, if you think someone owes you more than the value of your car, you're dreaming. Sorry if that sounds harsh, I'm not trying to be an A$$, but I don't want you to get your hopes up. Jordan
  8. I've never done a windshield, but mine is cracked, and the seals are bad and leaking. So, I guess I could have it replaced and the seals redone but I'm guessing it would cost a pretty penny (I have the bare bones minimal insurance - so anythign a pro does is out of pocket) and I'd rather just silicone the seals and deal with the crack. The car won't be needing a WSP inspection any time soon. In your case, it sounds like you might have good seals, but bad glass. There's a tool for reinstalling that rubber seal, and if you got that and some good glass from the JY, it may be a LOT cheaper to DIY. Give it a shot. Someone has to have some tips for you.......
  9. No exhaust leaks that I can identify. I HAVE NOT done the timing, and will adjust it when I get a light. I don't want to plug the AIS valve b/c I still need to get emmissions done. I think timing is probably the most likely culprit. Jordan
  10. Good advice, because I was worried about FUBARing my alignment. I'm almost certain the bushings come split, so it may not be necessay, and if its not, then I don't think I'll have to take anythign off. Just loosen those mounting brackets, slide them in and retighten. As for the axles, I was to understand that it could be done witout removing the sway bar or the control arm bolt, No??? Jordan
  11. Yeah, I was kind of pissed off when I saw it too. Its so loose in there, its like how the hell could you bolt that back together, and just walk (or drive) away knowing that thing is flopping around under there. Judging by the bushing I found online, It doesn't seem like something that would just fall off/out of there. I'm pretty sure the one I linked to is the correct bushing. The square bottom on the bushing probably faces up where the metal bracket is mounted over the steering rack end. Now the issue is that I have to take the tie rod end off when I do replace it, that that's going to be a PITA. Lucky for me I'll be doing the axle on that side anyway, so it will all get done at once. If anyone has a pic of pax side of the manual steering rack, I'd love to see it, although I suspect the boot will be tied on to the end of the rubber bushing, so no metal will be exposed.
  12. So, I'm a little slow. What I though was a loud rear end I'm guessing is probably just a loud front end. I know something is missing here, but after looking through the factory service manual I can't figure out if my rack needs to be replaced, or if this is repairable. What do you all think? (1984 GL wagon - EA81) I'm wondering if this part might fit in there somewhere: http://198.208.187.182/internet/PartImage.jsp?mfgname=ACDELCO&prodlinecd=45&acpartnbr=45G24014
  13. Uhhhhhhh, "it was kind of taken without asking" Now you know how the previous owner feels. Maybe someone "kind of took it back without asking". I'm not implying that YOU did anything wrong, but I would be more cautious in the future with purchasing vehicles that don't have free and clear titles. Jordan
  14. Wow. That's about as simple and direct as it gets. I'm going to make a bumper sticker or t-shirt out of that.
  15. Wait a minute, has anyone sucessfully put an EJ22 into an 84 or older EA wagon? I want photos if you did. THAT would be friggin awesome. (staring at my legacy wagon and my EA81 wagon, I begin to scratch my head)
