  1. Cool. That's good to know - I made my own tool, but it never hurts to have options.
  2. Please tell us more about this peanut-butter jar condensor.
  3. I found a RX in the junkyard today, and grabbed the LSD. It's a different ratio than my GL-10 diff, but I'm sure I can find a home for it. The RX had a rear anti-sway bar. Anybody know if this will fit my GL-10 wagon? It looks like I'd have to do a bit of welding to attach it to the control arms, but that's no problem. It's a pretty skinny bar - is it worth my time?
  4. I made it out there today. On the third crossing, I got water in the distributor, and had to stop and dry out the cap. We did this a few times, and eventually it got started. We picked up a few other guys on the trail, so we had the soobie loaded down with seven people. Every crossing was a routine of "allright, everybody out"... cross the stream "ok, everybody in?" 14 times. The guys we gave a ride in ditched, so it was just me and 3 other guys coming out. On the last water crossing, we got water in the distributor again, so we dried it out and got it running again. The arcing wore a path in the distributor cap, so a mile later, the car died. We started walking (8:00 at night), and eventually some drunk guys came along in a truck and drove us back to town. I'll have to go out there tomorrow morning and replace the distributor cap. It sucks having to ditch the car, but I'm confident it'll be allright. It took 32 water crossings to finally do it in, so they're pretty tough cars.
  5. I'm going to a trailhead tomorrow that requires driving through several streams to get there. We just had a bunch of rain, and I imagine there will be lots of water. What's the deepest water you guys have made it through with a stock EA82? Any advice regarding water crossings?
  6. On my EA82, the dome light works when I turn it on manually, but not when I open the doors. Has anybody else experienced this? How did you fix it? And yes, I've tried the switch on both positions.
  7. Shoot a bunch of starting fluid into the intake and then crank the engine. If it runs and then dies for a few seconds, you know that your ignition system is working, and that the problem is in your fuel system. If it doesn't fire at all, keep working on the ignition system.
  8. I'm a 510 guy, and have never heard of an LSD or alternate gearing for the wagon rear end. Are you sure you're not thinking of the sedan? It has the same R160 differential as subarus, and LSDs and alternate gearing is available for that differential. It's not a solid axle though.
  9. Will an alternator from an EA82 fit on an EA81? The alternator on my brother's '81 died out in the boonies. I have a spare alternator for my '87, and was wondering if it will fit, or if we have to go buy an alternator.
  10. I dunno why you guys hate the covers so much. It's just like 10 easily accessable bolts. The bottom ones can be a problem if they just turn and don't come out though. I only torque the crankshaft to 45ft/lbs so it can be taken off with an adjustable open end wrench which I keep in the car, if I ever need to do a roadside repair. My biggest complaint is the fan becaue I have big hands. Is there any easy way to deal with those four bolts?
  11. Go to the junkyard and grab a cable off another car. Unbolt the grille, and the latch and remove the cable. You might have to unbolt a few other things to get it out. Once it's free of everything in the engine compartment, you can unbolt the bracket inside the car and pull the whole thing out from inside the car. Installing it, just do everything in reverse. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out.
  12. I know a guy with a dual carb EA-81. He picked it up cheap off an engine importer who couldn't sell it, because it wasn't california legal.
