  1. could you scan that sheet and post it? I too have an 87 non a/c that I was considering putting the A/C into. Mine already has the button on the dash, so I'm one part down! thanks!
  2. right on! I've got a long distance trip coming up wherein Kate will be full to the gills with gear, and I wanted to look into removing the lower halves of the seats to make a little more room down under there. And thought that maybe with the bottom tof the seat flipped up maybe the crago compartment laid flat, for easier loading and more overall space. thanks again! -Dok
  3. So, I feel prety silly asking this, I've had my subie for nearly a year now and know I managed to figure it on my own before, but it's got me stumped at the moment. How do you release the lower half of the rear seats so they flip up? muchas dankes! -Karl
  4. Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the support and knowledge. I think I will give Brian's a try, I was going to go there first after searching the message board for shops, but the dealers hours made it easier. I was trying to get things dialed in before I go out of town on friday...I should have listened to the little voice in the back of my head. I will say the dealer quoted me $75 for the alignment! I'll let you know how that turns out. It'll be nice to get rid of the camber I've had up front after replacing those half-shafts. There is the smallest of chances I didn't get all the hoses (well over 30 feet!) right when I put it back together. There's a chance that one of the hoses just needs a clamp as well. this was one of my other hopes when I took to the dealer, I was hoping that they'd be able to quickly track it down, if I had a vacuum leak due to this. I didn't keep proper track (lesson #?, how many times will I have to learn that?) of where exactly all of the cheesy FHI hose clamps were when I took it all apart, so I can't be sure that there isn't a vacuum leak somewhere due to this (forgot to get a bucket of hose clamps before spending sunday evening for the rebuild. oh, for one of those towns where the auto parts stores are open until midnight...). Probably my first step will be to go thru and just put clamps on all of them. With your indulgence, I'll post my notes of it's symptoms, they're particular enough that someone might recognize the source of my problems. Feel free to tell me more about throttle bases... muchas dankes, -Karl
  5. The good news: I wasn't doing anything wrong. The bad news: I need a new carb. My question: can I make my cruise control work if I put a Weber on it? The story: So, I've been frustrated with my carb. Rebuild went well, one venturi wouldn't come out but had decent flow thru it. Yet, when it was all back together, it was rather erratic to say the least. My friend who is wrench helped me tweak some more on it-still runnin' pretty crappy. I dicked with it over and over and finally got it to where it ran kind-of-okay most of the time, but still wasn't running all that well and sometimes it just ran crappy for the hell of it. I was hoping it was something simple, or just something I didn't know about and so I took it to the dealer (Carter in Seattle). They say it's just worn out. They say there is 1 carb still left and it's $900!!! They weren't really trying to sell it to me, and I know that they didn't take a long look at it, but what they're saying makes sense, especially since nothing I did could get it to run right. I told them for that price I could put a fuel injected motor in it. Before you suggest it, I don't have a garage or a back-up vehicle, so I'm not goin' that route this time around. It looks like I'll be takin' the weber road after all. Anyone got one for sale?
  6. a friend of mine had a Alfa Romeo GTV-6 that had all wheel steering, but like someone said, only under certain conditions. If I remember correctly not only did it only work over a certain speed, but it also had to be at over a certain steer angle. Again this was a mid 80's car. It felt like the back end was slipping out from under you when it finally kicked in. Unfortunately the vehicle did little to dissuade my (poor) opinion of most Italian machinery. I'm sure it comes from my military history background, and knowing what garbage their armour was in WWII, but like I said this particular vehicle didn't help that opinion. Maintence nightmare.
  7. me thinks he was working under the car and had set the parking brake assuming that it locked the rear wheels and had the front end jacked up and no chocks. It sucks when a car starts to roll away from you and you're under it! I nearly got crushed AND nearly put my first VW through my grandfather's haus that way! But that's another story. Something someone said towards the beginning of this thread implied we have ABS on our Sub's. That's not the case for the older one's is it? I hope not, I'm just old fashioned enough to prefer non-ABS because I'm going to pump the brakes out of habit. Besides it's hard to do power slides and other fun stuff with ABS.
  8. Miles, you're a kindred spirit, you remind me of a cross between me and one of my mentors! -Dok
  9. are you going to be able to off road in that? I might cry if that nice of a paint job got crushed by a tree! Then again I LOVE battle damage even more, and might love to have a beautiful paint job with a crush thanks to off-roading! my zwei pfennig -Herr Doktor
  10. west coast aug. 27-29: unfortunately, i am already booked for that time slot...hopefully Kate will be ready for a lil' off-roading the month or two prior though... -Dok
  11. I think I may need to replace my PCV, and I'm seein' lot's of mention of that in posts when I searched, but no one says where to get it. Is this something you can get, or order, from the auto parts store or this something you need to get from the dealership? Anyone know the ballpark on the price as well? muchas danke's -Dok
  12. be advised, in some jurisdictions carrying a gas can inside the car is illegal. It's petty, but if they can see it they might be able to pull you over for that (depending on the jurisdiction), and if they've pulled you over for something else, it's gonna cost you more dinero. good luck! -Dok
  13. I too had the 'subaru tappet' when I first got Kate. I was hoping it was the oil pump seal as well, but upon closer inspection of the pump itself, there was clearly some wear there. Subtle, but there. I'd definitely recommend checking the pump itself for wear... my zwei pfennig, -Dok
