  1. So if you decide to change your distributor from a Hitachi to a Nippon Denso. Are their any special parts needed other than the distributor itself? Anything other than a cap and rotor that is :-p I am alreadying running a high preformance coil btw. Thanks, Christopher
  2. Yeah we had also considered using a lotus engine, one of the 5 main dual over head cam inline 4 versions. I've seen the lotus conversion done before, it has great power... just not the reliability or the small price tag of the subaru. Plus, I think as long as we relocate the radiator we can get the motor far enough forward, and make the Morris a 4x4 That my friends is what it's all about! 4x4 with D/R in the Morris Just have to find a nice EA-81 drive train to get the project going. Thanks, Fishums
  3. Yep that is exactly why I am looking for an EA-81 junker Project morris gets GoPower. The Morris was orginally designed for a boxer engine, but the company did not have the funds to produce one during the time the car was being made. If you've been under that hood you can see this, from the extremely wide engine bay. The extremely tiny I engine, seems very lonely in there. The car weighs in at 1200lbs and came with a 30hp pre-WWII I engine, I guess it was what Morris had handy at the time. An EA-81 with some upgrades can easily get 100hp. This project is actually one being undertaken by a friend of mine. He wants a good reliable engine that can be a daily driver, and be a cost effective transplant. We already were taking measurements from my hatch and had the two cars along side eachother. It looks like it will be a fun project. Thanks, Fishums
  4. Has anyone done or yet consided converting a Morris minor? I have a restored 59 panel wagon, and the demensions to get the subaru EA-81 drive train under it look about right  A 4x4 no doubt would be my goal.
  5. What weber carb model are you having interference with the Hitachi? The 32/36 DGEV with electric choke? And how much clearence is there on the hitachi? Is there enough room to put an insulator between the carb and disty? I'm using the K730 kit from redline, This is the K731 for refrence same carb They just changed the baseplate I think.
  6. Nippon Denso (vs) Hitachi Well my motor is rebuilt and hopped up better than ever, but my distributor is garbage. When going to the local parts store I found I have options! Options are good right? Well not if you are indecisive like me! From what information I have gathered so far I have learned the Hitachi is the most durable, and the Nippon Denso has higher tech electronics. If you know anything about these two and could have some insite to help me make use of the better option, post a reply! I'll be most thankful. Peace, Fishums
  7. hey jon I'll weld it up for you, if you drop off the seats and skid plate It's required you go 4 wheeling too lol! I can't seem to find the time to get away from work lately! Overtimes a pain !
  8. EA-81's are no longer exsistant in any of the 3 major junk yards near me. Only EA-82's and newer.... and even these are hard to come by!
  9. I'm 6'5'' and I wedge myself into a 1984 GL hatch every morning  actaully there seems to be no trouble in fitting in there at all, I just can't spike my hair or wear clown shoes Good thing I never do that anyways! hahaha. Maybe the seat is broken? See if the passenger seat slides back further than the drivers? On my last car I moved the mounts on seat back further, that seemed to help alot too! Pecae, Fishums
  10. I might start making custom mandrel bent Y pipe header manifolds, I will get some pictures up of the one I am working on when it is done. As for changing sizes in pipe, you don't want to go from bigger pipe to smaller pipe.. you can burn up your valves that way. Duals are great, but your engine will run smoother with a Y pipe. It creates a suction that helps pull exhaust of off the oppoising cyclendar, great for low end torque! Duals would be great for a really free flow application with an aggressive cam and over size/dual carbs... Matching you intake pressure with your exhaust pressure is the best way to go. as for size of pipe only go: stock size to same size stock size to bigger size big header to bigger pipe If you don't think this is the case weld a plate on the end of your muffler then drill a small hole through it, you'll get the same results quicker
  11. reminds me of my old dual exhaust! sweet! mine was higher pitched though, on an EA-81. Nice paint they yellow is kinda wild but it works!
  12. Anyone have some good side view pictures of an AA kit on and EA-81 car? I see they have it on their site, but theres only pictures of the EA-82 with good shots of the rear wheel well. I'm asking because I didn't like how close it brought the rear wheel to the front of the fender on the EA82, I am wondering if the EA81 kit does the same thing or not. Their ground clearence is deffinately sweet though! BTW, where do you guys buy your TSL super swampers? Those things are SWEET!
  13. Yeah BGD73 has a point there, 87 octane can be used with high compression engines if you can get more air to it. If you want to run 87 try making a free flow intake, it has a decent chance of working. If you retard your timing to much you can run it fine but you loose effiency. That lose will prolly cost you more in fuel than the extra 15 cents for premium gas. I run 87 octain on a SBC with a 10.75:1 compression.. it does not knock, it was dessigned for it  naturally aspirated with an output of about 456 horsepower. So I wouldn't say it can't be done. There is always the cheap mans booster trick of taking moth balls (Methanol/Naphthalene) tieing them in a fish net and letting them soak around in your gas tank  A great booster, lol not so consistent, or professional... But if you don't want to risk clogging your injectors/feul lines a higher octane gas for 15 cents more is the better option! Be warned though some of these new computer controlled cars will shizz the bed if you feed them octane that's to high!
  14. My bug is a so so sleeper, it's to shiney to be a really one  Heres a sleeper, to bad he made the tubros stick out the hood though.. it would have been the perfect sleeper if he dropped them down a few inches. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7301086107254792808 There are a few camaros around here and one impala, heavy assed cars... that are running twin BANKs turbos.. one of them claims over 1500 HP That's half the horse power of a twin turbine M1A1 Abrams tank! They destroy everything that is road legal and hang out in a pack that sometimes visits the homedepot parking lot: sky lines, EVO's, STi', MX's, Supras, Type R's and even a ford pantera are what these three eat for breakfeast. The big block camaro has primer and rust all over, I'd feel real bad racing my nicely painted restored bug and getting beaten by that RAt! Imagine the guy who just spent $75K on a car and got powned, because he was talking to much trash about how american cars suck lol. Don't doubt any cars potential... anyone and anything can be turbo'd forged and ported. I've even seen a turbo lawn mower lol wish I could find the pictures. Subaru's rule, but when you can make 3 1/2 tons of rust layden detriot stand on one end and pass everything short of an F16 you've got to show some respect
  15. Yeah Side Draft webers are pretty sweet, there is actually a set for my fathers MGA that I have often drooled over I'm thinking the VW down draft style would look sweet with twin custom hood scoops to poke their little air filter heads through the hood would be sweet though Plus it might be the closest thing I can get to a snorkel without a gaudy plastic menis out the side of my fender  No offense to those of you that like them, I just find them unattractive for street use. Sounds like a few of you have some sweet projects going on. Post up some pictures I'd love to see them! PEace, Fishums PS: Darn that BYB kit not currently in stock
  16. Heres a question while on the topic of exhaust gaskets. I removed my ASB plates from the block, because I no longer use the 3/4 pipe that comes off of both sides with my custom carb job. The only issues is, what kind of gasket/way of mounting these headers should I go about instead? This is an EA-81 block btw. Any ideas? suggestions? I was thinking of just flaring some pipe and using the stock oval two stud bracer, and gasket. then just tighten them right down on the block.... It's just such soft metal I don't know if I can tighten it enough to stop it from leaking.
  17. If your talking about EA-81 carbed, decking the heads works nicely
  18. Those are pretty tight, did they make a set for the GL Hatch? Are they plane vinyl's or are they something different?
  19. Anyone have a picture of the mountain grizzly graphics?
  20. It's all good Jon, I'm 125% happy with this car. And honestly when you drive the car it's really hard to tell that there is anything going on with the compression, it's still damn smooth even with the low PSI on number 4. Only when your doing hard acceleration in the upper RPM's can you really even feel it. I'm just as happy with this one as the last one I got from you, If I'm going to buy a third one it's a safe bet it's going to be from you :-p . Thanks man! Fishums
  21. I recently got a great deal on a hatch from Jon aka (75Subie) The car is now on the road with 200,000+miles Thought I would like to share some photos. That's her sitting in garage bay two, getting some TLC done: Oil change, plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, and some vavle adjustment. Also got some mint hatch tail lenses from Gabe (JunkYardGabe) had to replace two cracked ones to get it DOT approved  Theres the back of the car, over all it's the cleanest hatch I've owned. One small crack in the windsheild and a few dents here and there, couldn't find rust on the outside. After washing out the door edges and sills you can see theres no signs of rust or bondo anywhere. Man was I pleased with it! You west coaster's might not think much of it, but here on the east side where salt is winter's king this is amazing! Just a little mud on the floor pan, Gee wonder how it got from the logging trails out back onto my car BTW this is after a power washing. One ball joint was iffy so I replaced them both. Though the sway bar mounts, shocks, and even brakes where all good. Impressed I was this thing doesn't get any better! For 200,000 plus miles this thing was in tip top shape. There are only a couple of things wrong with it that I could find. While driving down the highway I notice I was becoming slightly intoxicated, I quickly opened my windows and got some fresh air. This made it very easy to tell I had a slight exhaust leak somewhere. It's actually right where the Ypipe meats there, nothing a little welding can't cure though. Not bad for the OEM from factory exhaust wouldn't you say? Yep there's the engine, needs some degreaser for sure. This was the only down side to the car. Everything and I mean everything on this beauty works great, except it's got the slight tick of death going on. Yep what a bummer.... well at least for some of us After some vavle adjusting it got a little quiter, it still has plenty of subaru low end grunt, but around 4500 RPM it shakes quite a bit and looses power. After doing a Compression check I found that cyclendar number 4 has only got 21 PSI :-\ The spark plugs threads are also almost completely stipped out on that cyclendar, and adjusting that vavle seems to have little to no effect. For running on 3 though it's got some marbles though, gotta love a boxer. So what to do... hmmm PERFECT! drop in a currently being rebuilt motor, BYB lift kit, WRX blue paint job, New Seats, Toyota rims with TLR's, and a 3.9 ratio LSD/5 speed... I think that will make her perfecto! Have a 264/220 cam going into her, decking, porting, and polishing the heads. Making a custom Maderal bent Y-Pipe and mounting on a set of moded VW dual webers, with a MSD Off road ignition system and high voltage coil to light her up. That should make her Cherry for now! I'll put up some more pics when I get to the next stage Hopefully I'll have time this weekend to get some of this done, wish me luck eh? Peace, Fishums PS: Bay three wants to say hi! Me low rider bugger
  22. The Germans made some high quality stuff and the japanese learned from them, as did the rest of the world. VW is a spawn of porsche, which Dr Ferdinand created. This even included a fully fuctional 4 wheel drive electric car created in the year 1900. The air/water cooled versions of the VW/porsche have been heavily borrowed from and are amazingly strong reliable power plants, Subaru would be stupid not to use them :-p! If you have worked on air cooled VW/Porsche engines you will see they have so much in common you can even bolt some the engines and parts back and fourth, with no modifications. Everyone learns from everything, I'm sure even Ferdinand himself didn't just have the idea of opposing cyclenders pop in his head overnight. http://www.motorsportshalloffame.com/halloffame/1996/Dr_Ferdinand_Porsche_400.jpg I have a picture of the first beetle rolling out of the factory, with hitler driving it and Ferdinand at his side. I'd post the image but I would most likely be called a raciest, so I'm not going to bother lol. Look at it this way, who was germany allied with in WW2? wouldn't it be benificial to share technology with your friends? That's my guess. PEace, Fishums
  23. Sorry I thought it was an upgrade and he was running non silver non copper non platnium plugs. I know they are an upgrade for my EA-81 The advice was if platnium is an upgrade go for it, if you are running better than platnium why would you down grade? This advice was for someone running less than platnium. If you can get a hotter cleaner more effective spark, is there any reason not to take it? I'm not talking welding arcs, but common! like the motors I use them on: SBC 350 VW 1650cc VW 1950cc EA81 1800cc Honda B-16 Platnium was an upgrade for all of my motors, only the later one is somewhat modern though. All of which I noticed a power gain using bosch platniums, over ac delcos, champions, valuecraft, or any other cheaper brand. PCV vavle = power robbing emissions, I still run a seperate air filter for mine. It gets me better MPG, and the oil stays cleaner, carbs stay cleaner. It's prolly my mistake for replying in the new generation thread, I thought I was under the older generation. Your motors come stock with what I see as performance plug options goodies in my cars. Also you might not pass emissions if you remove your PCV valve. I'll go back to the old gen threads where I belong :-\
