  1. <<Test for voltage at the starter signal... Next test, use a section of wire to *jump* power to the solenoid.... >> Great feedback - all. I'll try it. Thanks.
  2. nipper: Car has power - windows work, antenea, etc.... Car will not crank. Turn the ignition key all the way clockwise and lights, radio, etc go off as if to start but nothing happens - starter does not engage.... Car has 148k miles on the odometer. screwbaru2: Car will not start in neutral either. The car was started earlier that day. Thanks for the assistance with troubleshooting this! <<Define "won't start". Does it crank? If it doesnt then Neutral will work and you will need an inhibitor (neutral saftey ) switch. If it does crank, check for spark. ALso we need to know how many miles on this car.>>
  3. Legacy Won’t Start - Automatic Transmission – Bad Switch? I have a ’90 Legacy AWD Wagon that will not start. I am pretty sure that it is a problem with the switch (not sure the name) that prevents the car from starting unless it is in PARK. How do I get at this thing to replace it? Thanks.
  4. Anyone have any experience with the Yakima Mightymounts? I have a ’90 Legacy LS Wagon with a nice factory rack - but the OEM racks have oversized cross bars. I would like to be able to transport by bikes.... http://www.orsracksdirect.com/yakima-mighty-mounts.html Thanks.
  5. What parts / seals / gaskets etc… would you replace when doing a timing belt replacement? I am looking for the definitive list on the parts to assemble for this job. I asked a question last week about a complete kit for a timing belt change in a ’90 Subaru Legacy 2.2l engine ( http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=81454 ). I have located a couple vendors but there seems to be a wide variety on what is included in a "complete kit”. Timing belt kits seem to include – 1 Timing Belt 1 Tensioner Pulley 3 Idler Pulleys Water Pump Kits seem to include water pump, gasket, and what appears to be the o-ring seal for the Thermostat. I will replace the thermostat at this time also... Anything else I should replace while I am at it? My intent is to do maintenance required while I am in there. Engine has 140k and maintenance history is unknown. Thanks.
  6. Great feedback. Thanks. I am comfortable going with one of the EBay kits. All parts do not have to be OEM. I would like to keep this under $200. Can anyone post the name of the EBay vendor? I did a quick EBay search and didn't come up with exactly what I was looking for. P-mail would be fine if you don't want to post it to the list. Also, what are your thoughts on the parts that definitely should be OEM - if any? Several folks on the SubaruVanagon list strongly recommend using an OEM thermostat vs. aftermarket.... Thanks again.
  7. Anyone have a good source for a complete timing belt kit (timing belt, water pump, gaskets, seals etc…) I need on for a ’90 EJ22. Thanks.
  8. Yes, engine is in the Vanagon.... Thanks for the ideas. Any opinion on oil weight and addatives?
  9. Hi Nipper: Thanks for the reply. <<I am going to ask a few questions first... What condition did you find the engine in. How was it stored. Can it be turned by hand?>> Engine was purchased by a well known Indy engine builder to go in a sprint car project that never materialized. Engine sat is his engine shop for several years covered in plastic with all ports taped. Other than wipe it down a little I have done no prep. All of the gaskets and seals that I have inspected seem perfect. Engine turns by hand. I had to drain the oil and drop the oil pan to mount the engine mounts so it has a new oil filter and will have fresh oil. <<An engine sitting around for a while can be a bit of an unknown.>> Agree. I guess I will know more once it is started and run for awhile…. <<Have you lubricated the cylinder walls?>> I have not. Please walk me through this process. I don’t want to damage the engine during the initial start-up. <<Have you removed the valve covers to see what condition the valve train is in?>> I have not, but if it is anything like the rest of the engine it will be in perfect condition. Pic available. Send me a p-mail…. Thanks! [/font]
  10. I am a week or so away from turning the key on a SubaruVanagon conversion (fingers are crossed). I came across a new old stock (NOS) Subaru 2.2l / EJ22 engine. The engine is brand new, never started, and has also set for several years. I have some questions about the initial start-up and the break-in period. -- What procedure would you follow ensure that the cylinders and pistons are lubricated at initial start-up? -- What viscocity oil would you use? -- Any special oil additives? I had to drop the oil pan to install the engine mounts on and the original factory oil was red in color. I am assuming that Subaru used some type of oil additive.... -- How many miles until first oil change? -- Any special driving conditions for first 500/1000 miles? Also, I would like to eventually run Mobil 1 full systhetic. Any opinions on when to switch? First oil change? Thanks for the advice. Dharma_bum
  11. I think the '90-'94 OBDI Legacy's only had one O2 Sensor. Later models had two. I am only planning on putting in one sensor directly in the CAT... but I need to make sure I get the correct one. Is the Denso the Subaru original O2 sensor? Thanks for the reply.
  12. I am starting a 2.2l engine conversion into a Vanagon. I have a NOS 90-91 2.2l engine. The wiring harness and electronics came out of a '91 non-turbo Legacy donor w/ 278k miles on the odometer. I did not get the Subaru Catalytic Converter (CAT) or the Subaru Oxygen Sensor from the donor car. I have purchased an aftermarket Catalytic Converter from Small Car Performance designed to work with the Subaru engine. The CAT has the port drilled and threaded to mount an Oxygen Sensor in the CAT. I have been looking at Subaru Oxygen Sensors on the internet and there seems to be a wide variety of brands and prices. Prices range from about $30 to $95 dollars and the most common brands seem to be a Bosch ($82) and a Denso ($95). Questions: -- Are all Oxygen Sensors created equal? Is the Denso (OEM?) worth the extra cost? -- Many of the Oxygen Sensors are advertised as "Connector BEFORE Catalyst". Will these sensors work for my application - directly into the CAT? -- Anyone have a favorite on-line vendor in the USA for the Subaru specific parts like this? This will be my first Subaru part purchase. Thanks!
  13. Thanks for the reply. <<Soob will not fit VW splines>> Makes perfect sense to me now. I pulled the pressure plate, clutch, and fly wheel. Seal looks perfect. The engine has two access points behind the flywheel, both with metal covers. One is large (right side while facing it) and one is small (left side). What are these called and what are they used for? I have the Chilton manual for the Subaru but it is woefully inadequate and has not parts diagrams. I am trying to familiarize myself with this engine... Is there anything better out there? Thanks again.
  14. I am just starting my first conversion and am assembling the pieces. I have a clutch question. Most my questions will be very simple so please stay with me.... My NOS 2.2l engine has a brand new clutch installed on it. I assume that the clutch is matched to the engine. What I am try to determine is this - do I need to purchase a new clutch or is the one on the engine OK to use? I have a KEP adapter plate and flywheel on order. I know the clutch in my Westy is tired with 135k miles on it. I will purchase a new heavy duty VW clutch if this one on the Subaru engine will not work. I am attempting to attached is a picture of the clutch. Any thoughts? Thanks.
