a story...i'll try to keep it short.. in the navy, commuting from Wash DC to Mich about once a month... '72 datsun coupe, hot summer day...half way home to Mi heard a whine from the rear, checked it out, rear end is too hot to touch, i figured it was a wheel bearing, drove on to Mi, didn't have time to do a wheel bearing, so i drained the lube (level was good) and filled it back up with synthetic gear lube, said a prayer, headed back to DC, a hotter day, stopped halfway back to check (whine still there) the entire rear end was just warm to the touch...... it was still whining 100K miles later when i finally cut it up and made a dune buggy, never did change the lube... one of the many stories in the past 30 years that have fueled my passion for Amsoil

well...i just got the car with 70k on it, the heater doesn't seem to put out like it should, i thought maybe someone had put the "treatment" in it so i was going to use a product to try and clean it out. HG's have been done, i figured i'd be okay with something recommended for aluminum. but, water it is....thanx

i'm getting ready to flush mine (99 OBW 2.5 DOHC) i can't decide if i should just flush with water, or use one of the products available. i've got a net T-stat, so i'll flush it with it out. the headgaskets have been done so i was thinking of using comercial flush. what do you think? when i'm done i'll replace with antifreeze and distilled water.

strange...this forum is the very first time i've ever heard of seafoam... i always try and keep my engines clean...or clean them up if i buy something different....i tend to prefer Amsoil (ya...i'm waiting for them to make a product i can drink) they make a couple of really good products, power foam for in the intake, and engine flush for the crankcase. i didn't use the engine flush in the 92 legacy before going to synthetic, and the oil got dirty pretty quick. i used it in the outback and the oil is still clean with about the same miles. of course to start with the legacy had a lot more miles and years to build up funk. i also use their gas additive, haven't really noticed a difference but it removes water so i use for that reason. i looked at the MSDS on their site for the foam and the flush, but i'm afraid the chemistry is above my pay grade.

looks great!!! i wanna do that too, my 99 will need struts before long....might as well swap out the springs too... but...went to Renick Motorsports Inc and couldn't find the springs i'm assuming the 99 would be the same as your 98, do you happen to have the part numbers of the parts you installed...

and this kit consists of???

ya...that can be true...depending on the level of maintence the car had, back to the dirty motor thing, if it's really dirty inside and has built up "false" seals the synthetic will clean these out and leaks result. i've put synthetic in a lot of older motors...none developed leaks, but all had a good maintenance history

Oil

the best petroleum oil has a film strength of less than 1000psi, an engine can develope pressures greater than that...so you squeeze out the oil, metal on metal = wear Amsoil synthetic has a film strength of 3250psi also...petroleum oil can react with water (that whitish funky stuff) that creates acids that can attack bearings, Synthetic oil doesn't do that... i saw a classic example in an engine running on propane, it runs really cool and couldn't burn off the water, the engine was loaded with that white funky sludge and the bearing surfaces had acid pits deeper then the wear surface... switching to synthetic totally removed the problem...and it never reoccured -
true....synthetic get's dirty, it doesn't go bad you may have to change it early when you first start using it because it is an excellent detergent and will clean out the funk in your engine. in my 99 OBW 2.5 i run amsoil 10w30 (also run amsoil in trans and diffs) it is rated for 25,000 miles or 1 year, at 6 months i change the filter (usually 7500 miles) then at a year i do a complete change. if i've just changed over an engine i keep an eye on it, if it gets really dirty (cleaning out the funk) i'll change it sooner. side note: i've been using Amsoil (the original synthetic) in everything i drive, since 1977 and it has amazed me time and time again.

okay...my 2cents i went from a fully loaded 99 Accord V6 to a 92 Legacy LS, i did it for the AWD....the only thing i don't have is a pwr seat....and rides and drives as well as the honda, of course i had the VTEC V6 with all it's power, i didn't really need it.....now i've gone to a 99 OBW...and gained heated seats. the honda was nice...but not practical....i recently drove into my 800ft driveway to my carport...pushing snow up to the headlights the accord wouldn't do that!!!
