  1. Now you've all got me curious cause I just revived my XT after a 2 year stay in Todd Martins field. The old motor was an EA82T in which i had blown a timing belt. When I replaced this (mind you that 2 years ago this motor was way over my head) I threw off the ign timing. Finally got it running, noticed it bogging down after a mile or so, started messing with the disty and subsequently blew both the ECU and the ignition module. I didn't know at the time anything about this car and subarus in general (hence the 2 year stay in the field). When all was finally said and done I swapped a MPFI N/A motor out of an 88 GL wagon into the car after I got rid of the 86 MPFI Turbo motor. As far as I knew the timing was 25 deg for my old 86 turbo motor so that's what I used but now the motor knocks even on premium pump gas. I was already going to dump a few degrees of timing to solve this but I was wondering what I did wrong. This would explain it. So 87 and after are 20 deg before TDC huh?? I'm gonna try it and see how it goes. Later guys.
  2. Whats goin on out there all you in subaru land. Anywho it's good to be back on the board after a long intermission. One of the many soob's I've just recently gotten running again is my beloved XT. Purrs like a kitten and the idiot at the local subaru dealership told me my turbo to non-turbo conversion wouldn't work (I've also been told by the same dealership that Subarus don't have freeze plugs, no joke). poop on him. Anyways I'm going to be putting my old turbo onto the 9:1 block with a boost controller so it should be fun. Does anyone out there know where i can get a good set of cams and/or head gaskets for this frankenstein, and on a lesser note performance parts in general for an EA82. I've heard rumors but none of them have panned out so far. Thanks in advance for the help guys. See you at the soob show.
  3. yo, word up from all us here at north end hardcore in washington, this is cody here and my buddy woody just did a 6 inch lift on his brat it pretty much consisted of hacked lift blocks off of a piece of 2x6 square stock and sticking it between the engine cross member, tranny cross member, and torsion bar. It looks burly. People keep asking me who drives the nice Toyota truck. I just look at them and smile and tell them that it's a Subaru. Keep fabbin' TL7.
  4. Spent $200 bucks on a new cluch kit for my 86 XT, yarded my motor (not easy), slapped the new clutch in, spent 3 hours putting the motor back in, sat in the drivers seat, patted myself on the back for doing such a good job in record time, looked for my keys and then found them in the passengers seat...right next to the throwout bearing...damn.
  5. Hey All, In case anyone wants to do some wheelin' this weekend, the annual fun run at Cayote (spelling???) Ridge is this coming Sat and Sun (Dec 6th and 7th) There's gonna be close to 300 rigs and about 700 people. Lotsa hardcore jeeps and toyotas and I think we need to represent the hardcore Soobs. Most of us Northern Alliance guys are gonna be there but we can always use a few more. I'm hoping to make a strong showing so if you want to and/or can go...let's do 'er. Thanks, -Cody
  6. Sorry bout that. I wasn't trying to make anyone feel like an idiot, especially another fellow subaru gearhead. My bad. Glad to hear your problem got fixed though. Enjoy your Sooby.
  7. Well I'm sure you'll all be glad to know that we've just chopped a '77 brat so I'll check all you're lists. I do believe we have a rear bumper but I think the only mudflaps we had went on my wag' I'll check though. GD, once your wagon dries out i'm sure I can rustle up some slightly less water damaged parts fer ya. LOL. Later.
  8. Well guys, I must say I had a hell of a time up at Reiters. This was my official first outing with the whole Soob crew. It was great to meet all you guys whos cars i've until now only seen on the net. They're even burlier in person. GD sorry bout the whole hole situation, when i saw you go in I somehow knew you weren't going to make it out alive. Fun times bailing out your ride though. Looks like you were in there long enough for your clutch to go south and to realize that you need a bilge pump. Thanks to you I went immediatly back to Todds and put one in my other hatch. You've still got a kick rump roast ride though. Q, i've only got one thing to say...NICE BRAT! That thing is just plain BAAAAD!!! SoobaFly thanks for letting me ride along with ya'. I'll have to return the favor when i get the hatch battle ready. When I get my USB cable i'll upload the pics i took. Anyone else I didn't mention it was great meeting and wheeling with all you guys. I'm pretty proud of my little black wagon, she did alright. Still glad I didn't take 'er down the Hobbit though. By the way, Zap, thanks for the trail run back to my ride, it was awful rainy, and your hatch is bad-rump roast. We're gonna have to do it again REAL soon!! We here at the "Northern Alliance" will definately be there next time. By the way, the Northern Alliance is made up of Todd, Brian, Woody, Mike, Lance, and Cody (me) in case anyone wants to know. Good luck, see you next time, and thanks again. -Cody
  9. I've got a 79 wagon that i pieced together, we went from field to freeway in 2 weeks, i'm quite proud of that, but i digress, one of the things i replaced on the motor was the heads and they had cracks between the valves, not serious but not pretty either. We simply took a brass center punch (you know, the beefy brass rod with a shallow pointed end) put the point dead center on the crack and gave it 2 good firm whacks with a ball peen hammer. Don't go postal on it but give it some love. It seals those cracks just fine. Just make sure you don't hit the valves. Ive done this on a couple of other soobs and they all run great. It even fixed a coolant leak on one of them. Good luck.
  10. The only things I can suggest are to check the torque on the bearing caps that hold the cam in place and make sure the cam's not loose and to verify that you have oil pressure. The ea82 as i'm sure you know is overhead cam with non-adjustabe hydraulic tappets. There's no real adjustments that can be done by us backyard sooby mechanics. The only real valve-associated noise could be loose cam or lack of oil pressure. With no oil-pressure there is no film of oil to cushion the cam lobe when it contacts the tappet or the tappet when it contacts the valve stem. That would cause slapping and knocking all over the place. If neither of these is it, or it's not valve noise, get a new motor. Hope this helps. Good luck.
  11. I was formerly "TheNumberOneStunner" but now i'm just the "NumberOneStunner" due to a server descrepancy. Apparently, even after I logged in the server still thought that i was a visitor. Every time i went to the home page it said "Hello Visitor" (frustrating to say the least) So I've re-registered and I have a new e-mail address "youvebeenstunned@hotmail.com" I don't know if anyone cares but i figured i'd let everyone know as i'm trying to establish myself on this board. Thanks guys.
