  1. nipper, fastwgn286, thanks. I'll probably end up pulling the engine. Good time (if that's possible) to do timing belt, cam seals, and whatever else needs tlc on the outside of the engine. Monte
  2. I've done an ea82 a couple times, simplier yes, few hours. I've got an engine block tilt thingy for an engine hoist. I'll see if it is worth the money. Don't have an engine stand, but I might get one. I've got a couple ea82 projects coming up. Monte
  3. Can the HG job be done with the engine in the car, or does the engine have to be pulled? If it has to be pulled, what do you do with the A/C? Bummed, Monte
  4. Every hitch I looked at (Class II) required drilling. I looked at the install sheets for each hitch if I could find one. No a big deal, I'll drill. Thanks, Monte
  5. Thanks, those are all drillers. I found one no drill, but it's only a Class I, I need a Class II. I'll ask Jamie about the OEM units. Monte
  6. Anyone found one? If I can get away without drilling, I'd rather not drill the frame. But if I have to, guess I will. Monte
  7. I want to swap a ej22 into my '82 5sp d/r wagon. Where do you get the engines? I've been searching around USMB and it seems the "best" is to get a donor car and pull everything from that, engine and harness. Do you just keep checking your local jy for a donor car? My "local" jy is too far away for that. Can you get a JDM engine (online) and find a complete harness/ecu and hope to make them mate up? If you have a complete harness and a JDM engine, wouldn't the worse thing that could happen is some connectors on the harness don't match the hardware on the engine? Are there any places that can get you both engine and harness from one car and ship it to you? Aarons do that? My work hours make it really tough for me to call these places to check. I'll be using this car for road tripping. I'd like to do some offroad in Moab someday, just cruising around in the desert. Might do a small lift sometime. Monte Bellingham, WA
  8. This one? http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=41569&highlight=vac+gauge+cat I'll give it a go tomorrow, thanks. Monte
  9. Mine will still get it up to 80, but it takes awhile. Can't pull I-5 hills in 5th, that's the part that bugs me. Monte
  10. The old fuel is gone by now, plus a can of Seafoam has been run through the fuel tank. I suppose I should probably replace the fuel filters too, the more I read about them/it, I have no idea when those have been changed. Monte
  11. I've got a D4R84-52 distributor on my '86 carbed GL Wagon 4wd. Is that the right one? On Roo-Builders web site that's the Turbo disty. I found a disty on eBay, same number, the seller says it's for a carbed engine. The Subaru FSM shows the different disty numbers, but only specifies which one is for the SPFI, but doesn't tell which is for carb or Turbo. Monte
  12. So, how do you diagnose a plugged catalytic converter? I've heard of them being plugged, but how do know that's the problem? I'm trying to figure out why my '86 carbed GL Wagon is so low on power. I had a leaky vacuum advance actuator, fixed that, now it pings a little but doesn't really accelerate much better. The car sat in the back yard for 3 years, so the carb might be in bad shape, but it runs smooth, just not much power. Monte
  13. I just called Roo-Builders and was told they're not in business anymore. Where to get a rebuilt distributor? Monte
  14. '86 GL Wagon. Took down the dist. number as I needed a vacuum advance actuator. I was looking at the distributors listed on Roo-Builder's web site, the dist. number I have is listed as a Turbo distributor on Roo-Builder's. Do you think I would notice any difference in driving between the Turbo ( 85/86 Turbo D4R84-51,52,53 {I have the 52}) distributor and the Carb distributor (85/86 OHC 4X CARB D4R83-52)? And would that difference be good or bad? Monte
  15. I wanted to check out PAP so I went down today, nothing worth looking at. I only found one distributor with a vacuum advance, but it was not the right one, been pretty well picked over, oh well. Aaron's or Philbin's it is. Monte
  16. Where can these be rebuilt? If one of you guys has a company name that would help. I did a quick google and didn't find it. I'm going to try the j/y. But if that doesn't work I'm afraid the dealership won't be very inexpensive. Monte
  17. I'll try a j/y tomorrow. I was hoping for a "quick fix". Now that I know what the problem is I want to fix it, I need to drive the car a couple hundred miles each the next couple nights. I'll try the dealer as a last resort, if they can even get a dashpot for it. Thanks, Monte
  18. Think I figured out why my '86 has such poor acceleration, the vacuum advance pneumatic actuator won't hold a vacuum. Can't find one today, guess I'll try to hit PAP tomorrow, sort of a long drive from Bellingham if they don't have one. Monte
  19. Here's an article on dual Webers on a VW. It also mentions the UniSyn Carburetor Syncronizer tool. I used something else, but this is the same sort of tool, looks like $25 or so. You'll have to Google it to find more information on the tool. Monte
