  1. I found a southern USA imported sub-frame today locally ..... through a local suby forum member for $450. Thats not bad for a easy pickup part in great condition, I saw a few pics today and it is very mint. I will be recommending to my friend the H6's owner that we go in this dirrection. I will still be taking some comparisons and measuremnet the next time I have a 4th gen in my driveway, its still worth investigating alternative options in my opinion.
  2. Locally they are $795.00 from the dealership ...... Holy spoob! I do have a '00 parts car at my fathers and it has a servicable subframe, not perfect but better then this patched one ...... but like IVANS its buried until springtime. I just know that the yard that has the '07 XT is a small time outfit and doesn't really know what they have, i picked up the momo wheel for $20 & odds are the subframe will be very cheap! The next time my father comes up with his '09 Outback I will jump under it compare the body/lateral link mounts and take some measurements, or maybe go pull some specs off the '07 XT ...... I work as a aircraft mechanic and am pretty good at "mesuring twice and swapping once". I still have faith that Subaru is far to cheap to only use a major componenet on only one generations run of the Legacy! Guess I will be the first really look into this. Ian
  3. Hey guys! A good friend just picked up a '01 H6 outback for cheap locally, it is in great shape overall but has a patched rear sub-frame. I have worked on suby's for years and own a '03 Legacy myself ..... so was aware of the issue on the 00-04 gen's have been planning on picking up a extra rust-free rear sub-frame for my '03 to keep in parts stock anyway. Here is the question. Can I use rear subframe from a '04+ legacy/outback on a 00-04? Subaru has always been a "lego" manufacturer and when I replaced my '95 Legacy rear sub-frame I used a '03 Impreza and it bolted right up. There are zero 00-04 locally to me with solid sub-frames, but there is a '07 XT just up the road that is very low mileage and solid. After looking at a few pics it really looks like the fourth gen sub-frame is the exact same, minus a exhaust hanger loaction which is a easy fix. Anyone know for sure if they bolt up? Anyone try one out yet? Any input or parts info would be appreciated. Cheers, Ian
  4. I parted out an SVX a while back and sold a few bits online on the SVX forums. - headlights - grill - tail lights - trunk (especially if it has no spoiler, they are very populer) - struts from trunk - cluster & HVAC control unit - wiper arms and motors - and a bunch of small interior bits - EG33 swap and the full dash harness and ecu/tcu
  5. It's a subaru AWD requirement. It will create premature wear and can cause major damage to the differentials.
  6. Could I not just freshen up the `03 long block & plug the EGR port. Then run it off the `00 harness, cam & crank sensor sprockets, intake manifold and ecu. It`s basically the reverse of what I am doing to the `03. BTW I have the complete `00 outback on hand. Plus I have a few other subaru engines available (Ej22t, EG33, and a EJ25 DOHC etc.) but I want to run a newer EJ25 sohc in the vanagon. Got hpétq numbers and better fuel economy and reliabilty. I love my EG33 swap but it is a absolute pig on fuel.
  7. I did find the thread on the EGR drill and tap. Looks pretty straight forward, I work as a aircraft maintainence engineer and pretty much just drill holes in aluminum for a living. I might spin up a few drill stops on the lathe to fit the drill bits to manage - control hole depth.
  8. I have a '00 EJ25 (SOHC non-egr) from a BH outback that has been completely rebuilt on hand in the shop. I just picked up a '03 BH legacy (SOHC + egr) with a pretty strong noise in the engine, either piston slap or immanent tensioner failure. I rebuilt the '00 EJ25 planning on swapping it into a VW Vanagaon, this is a long term project that won't be on the road until 2014....... hopefully. So rather then pull the '03 EJ25 and doing a rushed R&R, I would like to just drill and tap the EGR port into the '00 outback engine and swap it into the '03. Then I can rebuild the '03 at my leisure and use it in the van when the time comes. So aside from the EGR stuff is there anything else that needs to be changed over from one long block to the other? I read somewhere to swap the cam and crank gears, not sure why exactly since both are phase2 SOHC 2.5's. Anyway any input or advise would be appreciated.
  9. It is tied into the engine coolant system, the turbo on the ej22t is oil & water cooled. The system needs a fill point higher then all its components, and due to the turbo location a radiator cap won't work. So they designed that tank to do the job, and you are right they usually are cracked.
  10. Thanks for the link. I am going to go with 00-04 Outback struts - 05 Baja turbo springs running some 205 or 215/75r15's.
  11. I actually just posted in that thread at request of the originator, and skipped right passed your BH Legacy. That looks about right to me as a great starting point, plus I have all the parts already. Thanks man.
  12. I had a '95 Legcay with '04 forester struts and springs on it running on 215/70R15 Dunlop Graspics & 1999 Forrester 15" steelies. I only did the strut/spring swap and then used a 1/4" DIY plastic rear spacer to even it out a bit. It was a tank ...... no rubbing and had no camber or odd tire wear issues. I didn't even get it aligned after the swap, just marked my front camber bolts and reidexed everything on the reinstall. It was my DD (120km daily) like this for over a year with no issues.
  13. A few years ago I used to have a '95 legacy lifted on XT forester strut and springs. I now would like to lift my '03 legacy and am wondering what parts i would need off an outback to do so. I have a complete smashed '00 outtback to scavenge parts from. Here is a quick list of what i am thinking... To start: -outback struts and springs -subframe spacers Later on: -aftermarket strut spacers -maybe some king springs Just wondering if anyone has lifted a 00-04 legacy? Also what's the biggest tire i can run with the outback suspension setup? Thanks, Ian
  14. I just went to a local small junk yard and they have a rolled/wrecked '07 Outback XT (Turbo/4eat sport shift) they are parting out. Beside the engine and trans swap are there any other parts that are bolt on upgrades for my '03 Legacy L? Here is a quick list of what I could think of off the top of my head.... - Brakes front and rear (will require big wheels I assume) - Rear sway bar, front is turbo so at least on my old suby's that makes it a no go) - Leather shift knob and steering wheel (blown bag on the wheel) - Seats (fronts are gone unfortunately) Unknown possible swap ideas? - Center Console & 6 disc player? - Carpet? - Dash? - Door Cards? - wiper arms? - ?????? Any ideas or tips on what to snag off this beauty? She is smashed hard, front end is drove into the motor and all the glass is gone. I waiting for them to get back at me with a price for the complete car, but would like a parts list to work with if that falls through.
  15. I happen to have a spare complete EG33 in the garage as well as the one in the rally car running. Since the 81 was originally an aircooled van there is less space then the newer water cooled versions. I plan on reversing the intake manifold/coolant manifold and relocating the alternator. I can mock all this up on the spare EG33 and will test it in the legacy to make sure it runs right before pulling the motor from the rally-x car. I am going to run the KEP adapter plate and build my own engine mount using the original subaru crossmember and some fab work. I am going to run a front mount radiator with dual fans, probably a OEM vanagon setup. And no heater core, at least right away. Today I will start testing the revesed intake setup and mocking up the alternator relocation.
