  1. Plenty of space for my 2 and 5 year olds. It's DEFINITELY got more back seat room than a Forester, though. Ignore whoever said that the Forester is a good family car.
  2. I know, I know, it depends on a lot of things: location, other parts required, etc. But I'm just looking for general opinions. My '99 Outback is probably gonna need a clutch soon, so what number would not seem surprising to you if you were in my place? Anyone had this done recently? Any thoughts on private mechanics versus dealers versus transmission shops? Thanks in advance for any and all comments -
  3. Now here's a thread I can relate to! Don't have any readily available pics of my Outback's many flaws, but here's my '93 Legacy wagon. In addition to the usual rust spot, you might also notice the dent just in front of the taillight (from a hit-and-run in an elementary school parking lot, no less) that I popped back out with my hand. Still a little white paint visible from the perpetrator's car, too.
  4. I just carefully masked around mine and shot it with a spray can. Not a perfect way to do it, but it sure was easy (and it looks nicer than the two-tone black and silver).
  5. I've got the exact same car (5 speed) with 183,000 on it. I've been getting between 25 and 27 consistently, with a mix of highway and city.
  6. OK, apologies in advance, but I'd like to hear concise opinions on this without searching thousands of threads, so here we go: I have a '99 OBW that I picked up REALLY cheap (because it has 180,000). It's my third Sube, but my first with this motor. So I know who the former owner is, and I'm wondering what I should ask him (in terms of what work has been done)? I've heard various things like "oh, it's OK as long as this particular thing was addressed", etc. I realize that my HG may fail anyway, but what might have been done to deal with this in the past, just so I'll have as much info as possible? Thanks - (Sorry - I know that laughing face doesn't belong here, but my 4 year old daughter REALLY wanted to put it in anyway...)
  7. Ok, I know from reading this board that a newer WRX CD changer combo should be a "plug and play" replacement for my 1999 Outback Limited. So here's the situation: I bought one of thesee changers ('02) from ebay, and just tried to install it, with no luck. I know my car's wiring is OK, because I just plugged the old stereo back in and it still works. So obviously I might just have gotten a bad head unit, but is there anything else I'm not thinking of here? Anything that I might need to do differently to make this thing work (other than getting my money back)? Thanks for any and all advice....
  8. On the subject of back seat room (especially for child seats): I drive a Legacy (two of them, actually), and there's plenty of room for my two kids' car seats in either one. My wife used to have a Forester, but we ended up trading it for a Honda CRV, because the Forester's back seat was just too cramped once we had a second kid. It's not that you couldn't fit the car seats in it; just a personal preference for a little more room. There is a LARGE difference between Legacy and Forester back seat space.
  9. FYI: my '93 legacy wagon (auto, non-turbo, AWD) gets low 20s for city driving, but significantly higher on the highway (25-27). From what I hear, that's pretty normal.
  10. I had a 93 Legacy wagon for a few years, and I bought it with 123,000 on it. The main thing to be concerned about is the transmission (just because it's likely to go out long before the engine), but it sounds like you're OK there. The only other problem I had with mine was a leaky power sunroof, and chances are if it has a sunroof it WILL leak. Otherwise a great car with lots of life left in it. Good luck -
  11. I had this exact problem, as you describe it, with my '99 Outback wagon. I had the tires balanced and it took care of it completely. Good luck -
