  1. thanks for the input, i just checked pcv system, I had replaced all the lines when i got the vehicle, but I found oil is present in the line to the pcv valve, i rmeoved the valve and it moves freely inside, and checked with it in the intake for vacuum and it has vacuum and when plugged off i can hear the valve shut. maybe i should just replace it anyways but still have to perform compression test. any suggestions for a good engine swap? what engine? just looking as an upgrade type of thing.
  2. Hey everyone, I have a question and not really up to par on the subarus. I have a 1990 loyale 1.8 auto, lately has been running rough, smokes really bad when started, blue smoke, loosing a lot of oil, spark knocks really bad on acceleration, has no power (though i am not expecting a whole lot) but it is really bad. When i bought the car back in january I did all the routine maintenance items, spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, replaced all vacuum lines and hoses, had to replace those i guess called thermo vacuum switches for the egr, evap system etc for being broken. fuel filter, air filter, as well. did the whole top engine cleaning and seafoam procedure and car was running awesome. past couple months has not been driven as much, occasionally, and lately these symptoms started showing up. so back to my intentional question is, would it be smart to do a rebuild on this motor now, or buy one of those japanese long blocks and put that in, or buy another newer motor or any other good or recommended engine swap? or any ideas on what could be wrong now for a somwhat easier fix? check engine light is on as well code 35 for evap purge valve, it is a throttle body injected engine. Has 132,000 miles and from what i have read it is supposedly pretty young still for subaru standards, so that is why i am asking if it should be needing a rebuild or motor. I am going to do a compression test soon, and all that, just figured i would see some opinions from you guys. thanks. sorry for the long question!
  3. thanks guys for the info, car ran horribly when i got it, so i have already done the basic tune up of plugs, wires, rotor, cap, replaced all vacuum, coolant and fuel lines for being dry rotted and cracked, had to replace egr solenoid because of the line nipples were broken, car runs much better, tranny fluid is a good red color and shifting fine right now but i have been looking into the 5 speed swap just because i dont like turning 4250 rpms driving 65-70 on the interstate. and since i dont know when the timing belts where changed, if at all ,i will be doing those soon. so is it really worth changing the engine to the newer versions as many are doing or just wait if and when mine gives up? it only had 130,000 miles on it right now, or is there items out there to help the 1.8?
  4. First would like to say hi to everyone, and to say that I am new to this and bought my first subaru, so i have a lot to learn. Have heard they are very reliable and i needed a cheap good car, imagine that. Its a 1990 Loyale 4wd, 3 speed auto. Now I was wondering is there anything out there to help out the 1.8 performance wise? I know i wasnt getting into a supercar, but would like to do something to help it along its way a little better. See lots of people doing enine swaps, and dont think i am quite ready for that. Also i see alot reading people describing drivetrain like "ea82" or "ej22", "ea81t" what do these signify or mean? If its possible to explain easily I would appreciate it along with any other info that could help me, and I am excited for the future of my new subaru. Thanks.
