  1. giveaway sounds like the cold issue. temp sensor of some kind. something is failing to tell the engine that it is indeed cold, it sounds like.
  2. yeah, you are in the northeast, land of lots of people and hence lots of car parts. here in kansas city, ha! you end up finding all the stuff in new york, pa, oregon, etc. sucks. ( I'm from PA originally ). good luck!
  3. wow, you got it handled already. nice. good deal.
  4. I had a similar problem on my old 86 VW Golf diesel. At certain times, I would randomly lose headlights, then, bam, back on. Quite disconcerting at night at 70mph on the highway. Anyway, loose wire, something would shift at certain times, braking, accelerating, turning even slight corners, etc. Poked around and found a loose ground wire. I would suspect something similar in your situation. Good luck.
  5. Search under different years, you can specify 2 barrel, FI, or ECVT donors, etc. I saw a list a mile long, many without stated prices, which means the magic word, NEGOTIABLE
  6. I found a gazillion engines on http://www.car-part.com for ya. I would email or call a bunch of people and find someone willing to haggle. you'd be surprised how unmotivated some people are, and how some people will hook you up cheap and quick. You could get an engine on a pallet to you cheap. I did it with a Peugeot tranny everyone said I could not find or get economically. Got it for between 2-300 shipped to my door from this site. Matt
  7. Check http://www.car-part.com for a good used Justy engine. I had a Peugeot 504 diesel and needed a tranny, and everyone said, yeah, right, forget it, you can't find those. I found one on that site and haggled them to $200 shipped to my door on a pallet. Not bad. If you could find a Justy engine for a couple hundie on eBay or car-part, I'd do that...
  8. You rule. Thank you for the super useful link to the 89 repair manual. I think what I need is on page 70 ( on my viewer, 64 of the "real" manual ) of the 2nd section. I wonder if tapping into that speed sensor wire from the cluster to the computer will degrade the signal and cause an issue... Matt
  9. Okay, so cool, I have a VSS and if I can access the output, I should be able to use that for Audiovox or Rostra Cruise that likes an output from the speed sensor. Sounds like a project. The people at the cruise shop were like, no way, ain't gonna work period. Thank you all for the valuable insight. As I get more familiar with the car, I'll stop asking annoying questions, at least as many. Matt
  10. I must have it. I will initiate the process of selling the house, everything in it. I can live in the bed of the Brat.
  11. Talked to a shop that does aftermarket crusie control today, and they told me no can do since my car does not likely have a Vehicle Speed Sensor. Is this the case? If there is no VSS, I would need to use a magnety setup somehow? Thanks. Matt
  12. exactly, when you say the cylinders that are not firing have spark, where? is there spark at the plug if you pull it and ground it?
  13. Both P side cyls fire properly, and neither d side? hmm... sorry, should have read your initial post more thoroughly before replying. If you are getting spark to all cylinders but not firing on two, it has to be a fuel issue. If the d side plugs are sparking nice and white-blue spark, I would think it is not dist related. Fuel? Timing?
  14. Sounds stupid, but usually things like this are the simplest little thing, not the big expensive thing. Start with a logical system. Try to isolate exactly which plugs are getting spark and which are not. Check, even if you think you have, that each plug wire is going to the correct point on the cap and to the right cylinder. Take a good hard look at the cap and rotor, real close. Pull individual plugs and take a look at them for abnormalities. I would think the key is isolating which cylinders are firing and which are not by process of elimination. You need spark, air, fuel, timing, compression on each cylinder to fire properly. Check each cylinder systematically for each of these elements. Not trying to sound too basic, but I have found over time it is usually the little things that get overlooked, not the complex things.
  15. Anyone tackled this one? I see that Rostra and Audiovox make the units, but no specific application tied to the DL/GL/Loyale cars. Any reason why it would NOT work? Does the Loyale have a speed sensor or old fashioned speedo cable, etc? Thanks. Sorry for all the noob questions.
  16. Hmm...I like your idea of mounting it somewhere and using a spare blank panel. Great idea. I'll see if there is space up in there, and could just have the knob showing on the dash. Excellent. I feel stupid for not thinking of this. Thanks, though.
  17. Mine has only two positions, low and high. No int setting at all. Well, 3, off, I guess, but only 2 on positions. If you have the int wiper relay and the stalk I might give it a shot. Matt
  18. Thanks, I did see this on sites such as the infamous JC Whitney. I wanted to keep the stock look, if possible, but may have to resort to this. Matt
  19. I think in 1990 they decontented the cars and went to regular wipers. I would like to have variable, but would be fine with fixed delay interval. I just hate having no intermittent feature at all.
  20. Yeah, 1800-2k for a couple minutes. Ok, cool, this is normal. My VWs do not do that so was not used to it. Good. Thank you.
  21. I'm not the CarTalk guy, but funny that another Matt called in with this issue. My seat belt is actually the whole way back, so you can use it, you just have to unbuckle the belt every time you want to get in and out. I'm kind of a stickler about little crap working right, which is why I ask. Should probably just get used to it. Matt
  22. Thanks, all, for the good info. Anyone done the seatbelt motor/track repair themselves? How involved is it? Appreciate the replies. I am addicted to the great support on vwvortex, looks like you guys have the same going here. Excellent. Matt
  23. My 1990 Loyale wagon does not have intermittent wipers. Any way to add these from a donor car? Thanks
  24. Hey, there, Matt here in Kansas City. Was driving home yesterday and spotted a super clean 1990 Loyale Wagon 5-spd 2wd in a yard for sale and bought it. Am pretty much a VW guy, and wrench a little on those, but not too familiar with the Subies. I see people referring to different engine codes, i.e. E this or that, how do I find what I have? Only flaw with this car is the driver's side auto belt does not work. Any good source for replacement parts recommended? Car drives great, very straight car, but idle seems real high when cold, normal otherwise. Is this normal for this car? Thanks for any general guidance you folks can give me. Matt
