  1. I have a topper for sale up in Laramie, WY if you are still looking for one. It is a snugtop high topper style. It was white but i painted it black. I am not 100% what years it will fit but it doesn't fit that well on my 81 brat so I am assuming it is for a gen 2. Send me an email at overstreet.bt@gmail.com if you are interested.

  2. Alright looks like I can get a hold of a kit, is there anything else in the carb I should replace while I am at it that isnt part of a standard kit?
  3. yeah sorry i guess I have been in denial about carb thing. They kind of scare me.
  4. I put a timing light on it today and the light was consistent but every second or so it would miss. I have never messed with a timing light before so Im not sure if it is suppose to be a consistent cadence or if that missing is a sign that something is up. When the light was consistent it was hitting at around 12.
  5. So the problem went away for a day and now it is back. The cap and rotor still look good. It idles fine for about the first five minutes and then it wont idle at all. I replaced spark plugs and wires today but it didnt change anything. I dont have a light but I will try and get a hold of one to check it.
  6. Good call with the simple fix. The dist. cap and rotor were pretty marred up. It ran good today after replacing them, hopefully it will keep it up. Thanks for the help guys.
  7. So here is the latest problem with my 81 Brat. The car starts great and idles most of the time. After driving it for a while (lately around 10 minutes) it will start not idling at all so the car dies at stop signs and any time you engage the clutch and let off the gas. However, the car starts right up after this. The problem has gotten progressively worse over the last few months. Now it is getting to the point where it very rarely idles after running for a bit. Any ideas on what is causing this? This forum has kept the Brat on the road the last few years, I really appreciate the help.
  8. Thanks for the input. If it is the voltage regulator will I need to replace the ignition module again?
  9. I need some help. I have been having an on going problem with my brat. It started by the cars battery warning light coming on and then the tachometer went out. Then the car would dye unexpectedly and not start for like and hour or two. I replaced the ignition module and this solved all the problems and the car ran great for 6 months. Then the battery light came on again and the tachometer died and then with in a couple of days the car wouldnt start at all. Any ideas on whats going on with it?
  10. Yeah the module must of been funk. I replaced it and the brat is back on the road. Thanks alot for the help.
  11. okay so my 1981 brat has some crazy electrical stuff going on. The car starts with no problems and then will run for about ten minutes or usually far enough from my house that I have to call AAA to tow it back to the garage. Then after ten minutes it just dies. No sputtering or anything, it just dies like it had been shut off. At that point it can not be restarted, it turns over fine but doesnt take. But if you wait about an hour it will start right back up. After it died one time I tested the wire from the coil to the distributor and there was no spark so I replaced the coil but that did not fix the problem. So at this point I am pulling my hair out and I just want to drive my brat again. So what do you all think?
  12. yep you guys are right. I pulled the hub off and it was ground completly smooth on the inside. Thanks for the help. What hubs would be compatible. The local junkyard said that they had a couple of 81 subarus. Are the hubs generic enough that this would work? Brandon
  13. unfortunatly I dont have a parts car. Hey Im pretty sure I went through waimana on my way to go hike in the urewera's. cool area for sure
  14. excuse my ignorance but when I had the car off the ground and turned the front axel by hand only the passenger side wheel would turn even though both axels turned. Is this normal or could that be part of the problem. Brandon
  15. okay so you were right, its not the clutch at all. I put the car into 4 wheel drive today and it drives just fine but when I slip it back into two wheel drive it just spins. I really wish I would have tried this before I replaced the clutch but I am new to this game and hindsight is 20/20. Im just stoked that I put the clutch in right. Any ideas on exactly what the problem is and what my next step should be?
