  1. OK, I am going to put in a new O2 sensor. The guy said there is a knock off for $60 or a Subie one for $100. Does anyone really know the difference? Recomendations please! Thanks. It's for a 98 OBW
  2. Subaru dealers are always working deals that are 1-3% over invoice. I would think that a demo should go for invoice if not 1-2% below. They were the ones that used it. The Subie invoices are posted on websites as others have mentioned. Go in armed with those printed off, tell them what you want & thats all that you will do. Do not fall into their persuasions. Use other dealerships in the area if they won't work for you. I will tell you that there is not a lot of markup on Subes, so there isn't a ton of room. Good Luck!
  3. If you need a new diff. , Check the salvage yards. My folks just picked one up for a couple of hundred bucks. ALso, I would fight about the mileage being over by 330 miles. That's crap! Throw a fus they should break and hook you up....if anything give you a 50% deal.
  4. My dad is very hard of hearing, & a little weak on the sniffer...but my mom is pretty sharp in both. He changes his own oil & has done for years, so no Jiffy Lube excuse. Some whacked out odd thing that just happened! He is pretty keen on noticing fluids dripping. Could a rock or something put a hole in it somehow?
  5. Info on the fire: Apparently the differential dried up & caught some rubber grommets on fire. They have to install a new diff. & grommets. They found a used diff from the junkyard. Hopefully all goes well. They never saw any fluid leaks or anything to signal this, but those things happen! Sucks. IMO...they should have let it burn & bought an Outback.
  6. It doesn't seem to do it too bad when I am going down the highway. However if I have to climb a small hill it seems almost like it can't decide what gear to be in, but it's the motor, not the tranny. I guess we will try to change the O2 & check wear on spark plug wires. Plugs were changed this fall. We bought a fuel filter & need to try that too.
  7. We took an old rag and plugged the hole for a recent road trip. But it eventually starts to get cold again. And I don't get any drafts from it either. It is not around the door. It is up under the right front dash. Weather stripping doesn't seem to be the prob. So what duct work is there up in that portion of the dash? It doesn't matter if the vent is open or closed. Any suggestions??? It seems a few of us are experiencing this annoying & cold phenomenom.
  8. On my 98 OBW & my in-laws '93 there is a cold air draft that comes in on the passenger side. It is up underneath the right side of the dash. What is causing this. The driver sweats while the passenger freezes! It is cold right now in Idaho & this sucks. Any solutions?
  9. Ok I looked in past posts & found something about a car that was bogging down, but he had a K&N filter. I don't...and my car sputters when I go to take off from a stop light. It's like a little delay. I also notice the tach jumps 3-400 rpms ocassionally, and my speed did not change. It is acting fishy! Put some gas treatment in it last week & it has been a bit better, but is there something I need to check. Could it be O2 sensor, MAF, anything I should be concerned with? I would rather stay on top & prevent costly repairs. Thanks for the help.
  10. Ok, my dad calls today and tells me his 98 Forester caught on fire while driving down the interstate yesterday. Apparently he saw a billow of smoke and then a guy told him to pull over. Some other vehicles pulled over and used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames. It seemed to be under the car, back near the gas tank! So the car was transported back to our mechanic who is going to take a look at it. ANY IDEAS?!?! This is nuts! I will post when I hear more info. The mech. is supposed to check it out tonight. FYI :The body did not sustain any damage & smoke did not go into the interior.
  11. I have only been getting 20-22 mpg on my 98 OBW. I am not happy, but considering the cold & all the other stuff people have mentioned here, I also swapped my bike rack for a ski rack...less aerodynamic. Could be another culprit. In the summer I was getting 24-27 mpg. depending on driving habits.
  12. We used some aluminum polish on a '93 yellowed headlights. What a difference! Cheap too! Good Luck.
  13. Couple of thoughts... On a 93 Wagon, it was the lifters causing prob. Replaced & ok, but the problem returned 2 wks. later. Found a tiny piece of rubber in an oil galley. Hmm? Second thought...On my 98 OBW, slapping was loud. Asked a guy who works on subies only & he said to put some of this engine cleaner in my oil for a couple of changes. Although the noise is not gone, it did reduce it. SO check with your mechanic. I don't recall the name of mine, but it was a metal can & the color seems to have been blue. Sorry, memory from 9 mos. ago. Good luck. Subes & the slapstick...what a trademark!
  14. Wow! I am impressed with the Hybrid gas mileage. That is incredible. Think Subaru could make a car like that? Very impressive.
