  1. I'll mess around with my design before starting the actual project. My biggest concern isn't volume (the jack won't be the limiting factor in volume), it's the depth allowed by removing the jack. If I can get away with mounting the sub and keeping the jack in place, then I'll definitely go through with it. I just need to spend some time measuring.
  2. Swap complete. I reused the belt becuase I remembered it was replaced at the same time as my timing belt. Truely a simple swap, the hardest part was feeding the pivot bolt back through the holes. Hopefully the lights stay off, I turned on all my accessories and drove around for 15-20 mins, car seemed to be a bit happier with the new alt. Thanks again for the tips. eag
  3. So, after I leave the car connected to the charger at 2 amps overnight... I unhook the negative terminal to the batt, disconnect all wiring to the alt, loosen the lock bolt, relieve some tension by loosening the tension adjust bolt, remove the belt, unbolt the alt, and then reverse for the install, correct? As far as belt tension goes, I'm assuming the specs are for total play? Meaning on a new belt, the tension would be such that the belt could move ~4mm up and ~4mm down? Excellent help so far, by the way, my confidence is growing by the post. I appreciate the photo and diagram also. Beautiful work.
  4. Good to know, I'll try picking one up at NAPA if I get a chance before undertaking the swap.
  5. So it's a fairly straight forward swap? Sounds like the only difficult part is getting the belt off and putting it back on at the proper tension. Any tricks to help that part? I've been carrying jumper cables around since I was 16, thankfully my dad had a good concept of vehicular necessity. I can't even count how many times they've been used. Thanks again
  6. Old post, I know, but didn't want to start a new one, so... Just had the batt and brake lights come on this morning. Ordered a new alt from subarugenuineparts, will get here tomorrow. In the mean time, what should I do? I'm sure I can make it home no problems, but should I hook up a batt charger overnight? I'm going to end up taking the car to get a new battery once I have the new alt. Also, I've never messed with an alternator before, anything I should know before attempting an alternator swap? Thanks in advance for any and all advice. eag
  7. http://cushman.net/2006/11/06/subaru-outback-audio-install/ I really like this guy's setup, but need more info on his fiberglass technique... specifically how to connect the fiberglass back to the (presumably) mdf front. On another link regarding this setup (that I can't find right now), it says he removed his jack from the stock location, but I think it would be more beneficial to keep the jack in place. Then the woofer would fit in the same spot and allow space for the jack. As far as holding the enclosure in place, I'm thinking a lot of velcro. Where did you mount your amp?
  8. my 96 outback was bone stock, and it still had all the wiring ready to go. There are wiring connectors for the switches beneath the console, and there are wiring connectors for the seats beneath the carpet. Same with the OEM tweeter kit. There's a wiring connector for a factory tweeter kit behind the door panel (and the kit was only something like $15)
  9. There is a t-shaped incision in the carpet beneath the seats, just try to reach down in there and find the connector, it's in there somewhere. It took me a while to realize that the incisions were actually there, as I had no idea where to look. The girlfriend is the one that found them One note: I didn't realize until after seat installation that the seatbelts from my 96 wouldn't fit in the buckles on the seats from the 99 donor obw. Remember to switch out the buckles from the original seats to the new seats, just in case. eag
  10. I just installed heated leathers in my 96 obw. All it took was the seats, the switches, and a wrench. The switch bezel fits in the place of the coin pocket next to the e-brake. Plug-and-heat. I don't know how I lived without them.
  11. Combustion of fuel will always end up as some form of emissions coming out the tailpipe. While the emissions of biodiesel and ethanol may be on par with, or worse than petroleum in some areas, the carbon-based emissions are not introducing new carbon into our atmosphere. By burning bio-based fuels, carbon is being re-used as opposed to introduced. This is a MUST in the ongoing debate on how to manage climate change, and lower our dependence on foreign oil. The key is being carbon-neutral. Bio-based fuels are carbon neutral, not counting the production process. Now when these bio-based fuels can be created without the use of coal-powered electricity, or raw material transport by petro powered vehicles, then it will truly be carbon neutral. And that is the key to minimizing greenhouse gas emissions. Blah Blah Blah, I'm just an environmental scientist. Just a glorified hippie to most people.
  12. Is there refrigerant in the system? If it's empty/low the compressor may not engage
  13. Well I was the ultimate subaru noob before I bought bloobaru the 96 OBW AT. Payed way to much for the car, even though it only had 101k. Stealership bent me over and sent me on my way. After the HG's started leaking (within 8 months of buying the car), all I could think about was how much I hated it, wanted a new car, couldn't wait to get rid of bloobaru. Although I wish I had been on USMB before buying the car, the info on here has been tremendously valuable and comforting. After I had had the HGs replaced, I started doing small upgrades here and there, doing most maintenance work on my own, and now I can't wait to take bloobaru for drives. I'm gonna have him til he won't go anymore. And then I'll probably put a lift on him with some knobby tires and go offroading. I love my soob. Long story short, you are ahead of the game by asking questions here first. Feel confident that even if your car needs major repairs down the line, help is only a mouse click away, and you won't ever have to worry about getting jacked by a stealership or mechanic. Get a soob. You'll be glad you did.
  14. so a 99gt would have it? probably the limited series would as well... http://www.subaruparts.com/catalog/?section=19 It says to repair existing cup holder, but would that assembly just fit into my console?
  15. Slowly upgrading my 96 obw from bone stock. Put in the tweeter kit, dome light, heated leather seats, stereo, Yakima rack, and bought the dual outlet to replace the ash tray bin. Now I would like to find a cup holder (dual cup holder) to fit behind the center console. Currently, there's just a panel there, no ash tray. Any ideas on where to look? Is this something to source from a yard, or can it be purchased aftermarket?
  16. I posted on the wanted forum, and traded the switch for the coin holder. I know I got the raw end of the deal, but that's the beauty of trading. I have a whole lot more use for a coin holder than a non-functioning switch. In today's world of 'bluebooks' and ebay, it's nice to be able to trade something that I couldn't use for something I'll use daily. Subarugenuineparts.com didn't have the coin holder, and I haven't been able to find a supplier... so for anyone looking for the same thing, find someone to trade with. Feel free to delete this post.
  17. I remember seeing some old posts about a similar problem, and my car has it, when using the auto-down feature for the drivers window. When the window is down all the way, the motor keeps trying to send it down periodically. When this is happening, there will be a slight click or movement of the glass (very slight), and the window can't be rolled up. However, if you roll down/up a passenger window, then you can roll the drivers window back up. Doesn't happen every time, just sometimes. Might be worth a shot to search if it's a similar problem, I can't remember what the fix was.
  18. that sits in place of the switches in the heat seat switch bank? I just put heated seats in bloobaru, and the switch bank has the switch for heated wipers. Not an option in 96, and not anything I want. I would like to replace that switch with the coin holder, but am not having any luck finding a place that sells them. I'll put a post in the wanted section, but I thought I'd ask in here in case anyone had any ideas. If you want a heated wiper switch, I'll definitely trade you for your coin holder! Thanks eag
  19. My 2.5 HG experience... Temp gauge would start climbing after driving for ~ 20 min. Never got to hot. It would climb to just under hot, then slowly go back to normal. I always had heat, and the car's performance was never hampered. What I realized was that there was a small hole in the HG allowing some exhaust gas to get into the coolant. That gas would accumulate at the tstat, causing the temp gauge to go up, once the bubbles formed a bigger bubble, it would pass through the tstat, and the gauge would go back down. Hydrocarbon test showed hc's in the coolant, got new HGs, and have had no temp issues since. Hopefully this is not the case for you.
  20. I just wanted to say, I may have made a terrible decision. I may never be able to go back to cloth seats again. And non heated seats? FORGET ABOUT IT! Even though it was in the high 70's outside, I still used the damn things (and no, the AC wasn't on). It's just like a permanent heating pad, very relaxing. A word of caution... make sure you know what you're getting into before you go pampering yourself. You may never be able to go back.
  21. I understand why they went with the design change. When the 2000's design imprezas came out, people didn't much care for them either, but they definitely grew on people because even though it was a bit too different, it became SUBARU different. This new generation is supposed to make EVERYONE happy. However, it seems like Subaru has lost some of their identity in making a generic body style. Now that it looks so generic, people want the originality back. It's what made a Subaru, a Subaru $.02 for you.
  22. found it. they were beneath the carpet under the center of the seat. The carpet has a T shaped slit cut in it under the seat. Just pulled on the wires in the slit, and the harness was on the other end. Talk about plug and play! Second easiest upgrade I've done on the car. Thanks for the reply.
  23. So I'm putting in the new heated seats, and I've hooked up the switches to the connectors in the console, but where are the connections to the seats themselves? 96 OBW, didn't have heated seats originally. I know I already bragged about the seats in a previous post, but now I actually have a question, hence the new thread (sorry for crowding the forum). Thank you for any and all help.
  24. I got new seats! Too bad they wanted $50 a piece for the door panels, otherwise I would have a completely matching interior. But on the plus side, they threw in the seat heater control switch unit for free! $250 for both front seats and rear seat, dark gray, in very good condition. Too bad I have to work this morning, otherwise I'd be busy tearing out my interior. Bloobaru's got leathers!
