  1. 1000 Grind 'torque' cams, SOHC EJ253, no probs, work well.
  2. UPDATE: It seems it was a slightly loose exhaust manifold heat shield. D'oh. Engine a-ok.
  3. It's been doing it for thousands of miles now. I'm going to send some oil to blackstone at the next oil change to see if they see bearing materials; if it comes back clean, I'll start looking elsewhere.
  4. I've got an ej18, 123k miles on it, and lately I can hear a knocking sound on acceleration, usually only in 2nd or 3rd gear, and it's very faint, as in so faint that I can only hear it if it's absolutely quiet and I have the windows rolled up and the vent fan and radio off. It only knocks under load, and it seems to be RPM dependent. It's louder going up steep hills. I'm worried it's the beginning of rod knock, but I'm not absolutely sure. I don't think it's anything with the heads or lifters because it's load dependent, and I don't think it's axles because it's RPM, not speed dependent. Does anybody have experience with this?
  5. 1994 impreza, fwd 5mt ej18, 120k miles -- 32-33 mpg all highway driving if easy on throttle. 29-31 in my typical mixed commute.
  6. Ah that's probably it, I usually have my heater control set to mix defrost/floor or to defrost. I didn't know it caused A/C to kick on... Is this really true?
  7. Does the A/C compressor clutch engage even if the heat/fan blower is on, but not the A/C? I know on my 2005 impreza it does, but I didn't think it did on the 1994.
  8. it's had spark plugs, air filter, all belts, timing belt, valve cover gaskets changed when I got it 25k miles ago. It's not that it's running badly, it's not. It's that there's a noticeable transition in throttle response caused by SOMETHING, but I just want to know what it might be. EGR valve?
  9. Ok, hopefully someone will have an idea what might be going on here. I've got a 94 EJ18 impreza. If I'm at near full throttle, pulling up through the power band, say like I'm accelerating in 2nd gear, the engine bogs and seems like it's pulling at 80%. Then, at around 2500-3000 RPM I hear a single audible 'click' like that of a relay, and the engine comes alive and starts pulling noticeably harder. This happens very frequently and has been since I bought the car 30k miles ago. Not a big deal, I'm just wondering what might be causing this. I didn't realize my lowly ej18 had vtec, lol. I kid, I kid.
  10. Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong header design. If it's the equal length header, though, those do NOT contain a cat. Maybe a borla style unequal length header would bolt up to the existing cat.
  11. I've got obx headers on my 2.5RS, and while I like them, keep in mind that they'll make your car louder by virtue of their thinner walled steel, as compared to the stock headers. Wrapping helps mitigate this. Also, expect a p0420, since they don't come with a cat.
