1980 ea71 GL-5 - Voltage Regulator?
Ether Circus replied to Ether Circus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah I was wanting to swap out the alternator from my ea71 into it, since the ea71 has a bad rod knock. But if that won't work, then that won't work. I still might get it though... if he still has it tomorrow morning, i'll be there to get it. Thanks for the help guys! -
Hi! I found a good deal on a 1984 hatchback, and the owner says it just needs the voltage regulator. I believe that most of these are built in to the alternator. My question is, whether or not it is the same on my 1980 ea71 motor. If so, I will go get this car today, swap out the alternator, and drive it home. Any info would be great. Thanks guys!

Yes this does help a bit.. the reason i am wondering is because I have a 1980 ea71 wagon that runs good, but it has a rod knock.. and will not pass emissions. I found a 76 wagon on CL that just needs the carb rebuilt or swapped out. As far as I can tell, the carb on my 80 wagon is in good working order. So I shall ask what kind of carb is on his car and I will plan accordingly. Thanks for the info!

Does anyone know if the carb from a late model (1980) ea71 will work on an earlier (1976) ea71? It seems like it should work, but I need some expert advice before I get in over my head. Thanks in advance!!!

No oil pressure, clicky valves...

So i am kind of thinking (hoping really) that the noise previously thought to be rod knock is actually the distributor. I pulled the cap off and it's super sloppy. the rotor practically fell off when i touched it. I put an ea81 rotor on there and it fits a LOT more snug and works fine to boot. But there is about a half-inch of play when you turn the rotor either way. Now to find a good ea81 disty and coil... -

I do have a spare ea81 sitting in the back of my other sube that I could rebuild... I just don't trust myself to do that kind of a job. I actually just asked a buddy of mine to ask his co-worker how much he'd charge me to rebuild it and put a bigger cam in, so I'm waiting for word on that. Which leads me to the question, will the tranny in the ea71 bolt up to an ea81 motor? The PO did a clutch on this car not too long ago and i can't imagine it needs replacing. -
Good luck repairing the heater core... Easiest way to do it is to cut out the side. Not worth the work to pull the whole dash. there is a write up in the USRM.

I would check out the fuel filters. I had a similar problem but it was mainly when i went up hills. HTH.

EA81 distributor, rebuild or replace?
Ether Circus replied to TeamCF's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Wow!!! I have been having problems lately with what sounds like rod knock at about 2500-3000 rpms and I just read this thread and decided to check out my distributor. Pulled the cap off and the rotor has about a 1/2" of play either way!!! You say the U-pull in damascus has nippondensos? I must go get one. -

I stand retarded. I am, after all, the one who bought a car with rod knock. -

Okay this really threw me off too. SO there is the GL-10 turbo'ed EA series car. The GL-5 is a 1600cc 5speed Subaru GL wagon. So, I have determined that this was made before there were any turbo'd subes. When I first heard about the GL-5 I was like "WTF?! A Turbo'd 1600?!?!" But it's NA. -

Any takers? Make an offer? Maybe a good parts car. Doors and rockers have a little rust. Doors are the worst part. Has good chrome bumpers, brown/tan interior, factory subaru alloy wheels and located in Portlandish, OR. Sorry about the cell phone pics, I don't have a digicam. -

I'm not very attached to it yet. I just bought it about 3 weeks ago. I think i might just drive it till it stops. Unless someone wants to buy it as is. But i really doubt i'd get more than half what i paid which was $500. I am, however kind of attached to my 83 gl. But i broke a bolt trying to swap an axle the hard way. So that's on hold till i find my easy-out.
