AAV checks fine... Removed the 'Subaru Turbo' cast piece, plugged the line to the AAV and started the car, runs at about 2000 rpm, hand over the intake and slows right down and almost dies. Think there's still a vacuum leak in it somewhere, I can hear the hissing and it's driving me insane trying to find it!

bit mangled... new radiator support from the local "commwreck" (actual name, they're a Commodore only junkyard) 1 new front fender and a replacement radiator. Drilled out all the spot welds holding the old radiator support in, stainless steel pop rivets to hold the new one in place... took me a total of 1.5 days to get it driving again other guy was totalled! -
with the MAF still plugged in but no tube from the turbo to the intake it will idle fine, around 1100 rpm or maybe a bit higher. putting my hand over the throttle body intake will slow the idle but not completly stop the vehicle.

Thanks guys! History's somewhat unknown, the guy I bought it from was doing some work on it but it was in 'limp mode' when I bought it. I know he replaced the header pipe and had been tinkering with the MAF. I'll check the AAC and rotor, it looks like there's a reasonably new dizzy cap on it so that may be a contributing factor! I haven't messed with the idle speed screw yet, seems that I've got a leak someplace otherwise putting my hand over the throttle body intake would have killed the engine all together...

Yeah, I found it entertaining... not really a bad car, I used it to rearrange the back end of a 2003 Porsche Boxster convertible that was 3 hours old, but that's a story for another day! -
BUMP... Need help here guys... I'm going to check the intake manifold later to see if maybe the gasket is bad... That's one problem with buying someone else's project car, you're never certain what might be loose or leaking

As the title says... Here's the rundown, installed replacement MAF, re-connected the knock sensor, that has cleared the codes. Fixed 1 vacuum leak, re-attached the exhaust on the drivers side (still a little loose I think) one of the bolt holes on that side was stripped out. The boost light does not come on, the engine will not idle without a little gas pedal. I managed to get it to idle by removing the piece from the turbo to the throttle body, it'll sit at around 1100 rpm, it'll idle a bit slower if I put my hand over the inlet on the throttle body. With the turbo - throttlebody piece in place it will not maintain a steady idle. There's no codes in the ECU at all, looking for suggestions... timing perhaps?

I think tranny breather hose.

Especially ones that go into the firewall! That'll make a mess of your car in a hurry! -
I've got one arriving at my place in a few weeks '90 Loyale... I'm afraid that it'll have the 3AT in it though :-\

Like the blue ones running back to the firewall here? -

Is either end connected to anything? that'd be a good place to start figuring out what it's for -
I would think that any gauge would work... the part that would probably have to be metric would be where the sensor threads in if you were replacing the stock sensor with your aftermarket one. I don't see why it should make a difference if your gauge is reading Fahrenheit or Celsius... **Typed while Turbone was typing**

Finally no more check engine light :headbang: MAF + some hack job wiring on the knock sensor has taken care of that. I'm going to put the front up on jack stands now and inspect the exhaust from the heads to the up pipe, the car won't idle smoothly, it wants to 'semi-idle' at around 400RPM (not precise, 2 bars on the digidash) and it's lumpy as heck. It'll give an occasional 'fut' sounds like a back fire out the intake but it's not coming from there at all. I had my hand down the driver's side of the engine checking the connections on the manifold for any vac leaks cos I can hear something hissing and when the engine goes 'fut' I can feel a blast of air down there. Seems like it might be coming from where the exhaust bolts up to the engine so that's my first place to check. The idle smooths out at higher RPM's, I can keep it going with no 'fut' sounds if I press the gas slightly or pull on the throttle cable from outside the car. Have to get a timing light so I can check the timing and adjust the idle speed if needed also.

Dunno about here in the US but over in OZ you can walk into just about any auto parts store and pick out your Bull Bar... then there's the guys who custom fab them... I used to have one on my old VK Commodore... completely pointless but feral as hell! -
Awesome! That's a huge help! I'm pretty sure I know right where it hooks up to now! Seems like that'd be a good spot to hook into for a boost gauge at a later date. Thanks again!

Looks good dude... bit 'o' rust repair to be done but I've got some to do too so I guess we're in good company

Thanks man, I figured that the one on the left would be a major cause of vac leak, the question is: what does it connect to? I looked last night but couldn't find any other port that size that was missing a vac line... seems almost the same size as the PCV line and I don't have all my books with me right now... from the alldata sheet I looked up a while ago I *think* it's meant to go to a vac switch of some type...
-
Anyone able to offer any pointers on those ports? ======================== I also seem to have a couple of 'ports' for want of a better word, that look like they're meant to have a vac line hooked up to them, I'm going to dig through my alldata sheets tonight and see if I can figure that one out. The one I can think of is on the top of the intake, towards the passenger side of the car, it's just under the plug leads (although I think they're routed wrong!!) Here's a pic The one on the left is the one that has nothing connected to it. What is the component highlighted on the right? ==========================

Ya know what... You've already had this quarter's fair share of free Soobs I'll trade ya a '99 Mazda Millenia for your wagon and that Justy though...

Rather than create another thread I thought I'd add my update in here... Intake snorkus arrived 2 days ago (Thanks Barracuda!) and my MAF arrived yesterday (Thanks Crawlerdan!) Got everything installed last night, plugged the MAF in and cranked the engine. It'll start and run but I can't get it to idle without my foot on the gas. The new MAF seems to have done the trick in terms of getting it out of 'Limp mode' so now I'm just chasing down an idling issue as well as a coolant leak that I *think* is coming from the turbo cooling lines. We're getting there though!! I also seem to have a couple of 'ports' for want of a better word, that look like they're meant to have a vac line hooked up to them, I'm going to dig through my alldata sheets tonight and see if I can figure that one out. *wipes glasses, re-reads question, slaps forehead* D'oh!

Get it dude... if it breaks while we're wheelin' we can put it in the back of my wagon to get it home
