6pack for help w/ weber conversion on ea81
saturn replied to saturn's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I fear it may be a head gasket though... Thus the engine hoist request. But I'll check that! is it connected to the whole system inside the intake? I thought it was separate... and if you just don't hook it up it doesn't do anything...? -

anyone with an engine hoist able to help me this weekend? got the engine installed and everything swapped, but somehow coolant got into the engine... maybe a bad intake gasket? only have access to a garage for another week before I have to move it back to my driveway... -

no this is a large amount of unburnt coolant in the oil pan itself... oil in the intake would be burnt up or at least not just mixing into the oil supply. -

Exhaust attached. Needed some finesse to get the 1.6 header on a 1.8 though. Just have to figure out fine tuning and my headlights still won't work. Could the turn/brights switch be causing issues? -

no problem! I just am having trouble finding out where things go and if I'm missing anything important. don't want it to explode or fall apart after I start it. -

I was able to bolt some things up (engine to transmission) but I need intake gaskets and a few other things, missing some bolts as well I think I can fabricate a bracket for the throttle cable. turns out the little adapter I bought is for the choke. -

haven't received texts back from anyone yet... no rush, it's in my garage, but it can't stay in there forever as I technically only rent 1/2 of the garage... beer + pizza + money? to the first person to offer help! I just don't know where things go... -

SPFI sounds great but I don't know about all that re-wiring and stuff. I hardly drive as it is (it's been sitting for 6+ months) so having a carbureted car isn't that big of a deal. plus my other vehicles are all the same way... I think they work great so long as you don't plan on driving up any mountains and don't mind letting the car warm up. -
see my build thread here: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/137408-weber-carb-on-an-ea81-in-a-subaru-standard/ so I got a new ea81, a weber carb and all the other pieces. got the correct adapter plate. put the hitatchi throttle cable stay on the weber carb. got a manual choke pull. cleaned the carb and all seems to be functioning. it came off of a small 4-cyl datsun truck. but I can't figure out how to run the throttle cable. it makes no sense. I got this little $25 adapter piece from carbs unlimited in auburn, but no clue where it goes to make the cable work. plus a few other tiny issues I'd like to get sorted out. I'll trade beer and some cash for someone to come show me what's up and get the thing running. I've got a garage and all the tools... but I normally work on MUCH smaller engines (vintage vespas), so all of this is very foreign to me. I'm free this weekend -- preferably sunday afternoon (june 2nd 2013)

oh I didn't even know there was one...! in this case, I have TWO adapter plates for sale. -

Svengouli7: converted how? and I got an email about it... I thought the EA82 manifold bolts right up? also, since it came off of a much smaller datsun, I'd be afraid of it running too lean and my engine overheating. -

what about an 82 GL? was there a cutoff date when they switched to EFI on all US models? I'd rather stick with the weber carb for now -- EFI swap would be awesome if I had someone there to tell me what to do, but it's too much work to do on my own for such an old car. there are 3 huge local junk yards with lots of Subarus... one says they have an 82 GL -

so I wish I had known that before I ordered the adapter... because the adapter that came with the carb and the old Datsun intake seems to be one that will fit the EA82 as well - except it's flat! is welding the only option? can I just use an EA82 intake? the pick-n-pull locations near me (Tacoma and Lynnwood) both have 88 and 89 GLs -- that would be an EA82 right? -

is there a set jetting for sea level for the 1.8L? the ones in there are something like 138 and 130? maybe I'm making those numbers up - it isn't in front of me at the moment... -
got a 36/32 weber carb from craigslist for $100... came off of a datsun but the adapter plate wasn't the same... ordered the trans-dapt 2107 adapter plate from the internet (waiting on it to arrive) more photos: http://imgur.com/a/Ang6W#0 - where do I get the proper jets? (internet-only or would someplace in seattle have them?) - does it look like I'm missing any pieces? - will the intake manifold work for this? - will the K&N filter clear my hood? I also picked up a new thermostat and a generic fuel pressure regulator from o'reilly... anyone local to seattle want to help me set this thing up in exchange for beers?

got car back after it was gone... it's a bit trashed. got new hubs and tires and re-assembled the dashboard/steering/etc. brakes don't work though. when I got it, there were no pads on the front and the pistons in the brake calipers had been extended out for months. the boot on one of the calipers is rotting and that caliper seems to be slow but "working" still. brake pedal goes to the floor. bled the lines as best I could... would only flow for a few seconds before pulling fluid backwards (with friend holding pedal down) -- bad master cylinder?
