  1. The garage was AAA certified and all the mechanics were ASCE certified for whatever that means. Can anybody recommend anyone in the St. Louis area that could look at it or whatever. I've got to get it off the garage's lot one way or another..... Thanks, Mark
  2. I was going to work a couple of weeks ago and all the sudden my heater started blowing out cold air then the engine stalled. Taking it to a reputable garage I was informed it needed a new water pump (there was no warning signs such as it making a sound etc.) After tearing down the front of the engine and replacing the pump (to the tune of $300) the mechanic cranked the engine and antifreeze gushered out of the radiator and other places. Bottom line is the head gasket is fried and possibly the head is warped. Its a 1987 GL 1.8 L Turbo wagon that has 166,000 miles on it. What would you do?
  3. Hi Again, Thanks for all the great advice about my temp gauge problem, I'm pretty convinced its the radiator and am checking on the best place to get a new one (any suggestions)? Does anyone know of a supplier for the rear rocker panel behind the back wheels from the moulding down for a '87 wagon. My are so eaten up with rust, I'm not sure there is enough for me to rivet sheet metal on and form the bottoms the way they should look. Thaks again, M Karns
  4. How do I make sure all the air is out of the system? I still haven't found a cap for the reservoir. What is the acceptable temp limits for a '87 turbo. Thanks, Mark
  5. The fan comes on when its supposed to. What is the acceptable temperature limits? I'll but a mech. gauge on it. Thanks, Mark
  6. Hi Again, I left a message last week about my '87 turbo wagon's temp gauge staying above center and if the engine was hot and the car was just idling the needle would almost go into the red (hot) zone. Well I took it to the mechanics. Head gasket is fine, no leaks, no mildew, etc.. He flushed the radiator, put in a new thermostat and pressure tested it. Everything was fine he said. I got it back and drove it about 100 miles yesterday, and guess what. Same symptons, same problems. I don't want to warp a head but could this just be "normal" for the car to run alittle hot? Thanks, M Karns
  7. This morning I replaced the new radiator cap with the old one and drove about 45 miles. Temp gauge needle stayed just alittle over center, no where near the red zone. This is really not making sense to me. How can a new radiator cap cause the engine to run hotter?
  8. The water pump was changed about 7 years ago, but very few miles were put on it in those 7 years.
  9. WIth the old radiator cap the needle was between the middle and the red zone on the temp gauge. I replaced the radiator cap today and topped off the antifreeze in the radiator and drove 60 miles to work. The needle stayed below the center the whole way, thought the problem was solved. Coming home tonite the needle stayed in the normal zone right below the red zone the whole way, didn't budge. What could have happened sitting in the parking lot for 8 hours at work. I'm perplexed to say the least. Help.......
  10. The radiator has been replaced in the mid 90's.
  11. Hello Experts, You've helped me several times with you advice and I'm back with a problem I gotta solve. Since I've gotten my '87 GL Turbo Wagon the temp gauge needle has run just a hair over center to hot side and the reservior cap has been missing. Once in a while the needle would go up alittle more but it would come back down. I made sure the radiator was full and tried to keep the plastic overflow tank filled, but without a cap that was next to impossible. I thought it would be easy finding a lid for it, but boy was I wrong. So me and my bright ideas, over the weekend bought a tube of Bars and more antifreeze. Before I left for work today (70 miles each way) I poured in the Bars and made sure the radiator was full and the overflow tank over filled, then I put cellophane over the plastic opening and sealed it with a rubber band. On the way to work the needle went almost to the hot mark and stayed there. I was scared of warping a head but I made it to work. When I looked under the hood the plastic and gum band were gone and antifreeze from the plastic tank had sprayed out but its still over full. I gotta get home tonite, as well as back tomorrow. What could be the problem? The thermostat isn't that old. What dumb thing did I do wrong? Thanks, Mark
  12. Hi All, I was just reading the owners manual for my recently purchased '87 GL Turbo wagon. It says to use 90 octane. I've been using 87 octane for a month now and it seems to be running fine, no knocking, hesitation etc, and I'm averaging 25 to 26 mpg. Should I go to the 90 octane or not? Thanks, M Karns
  13. Hi All Again. I really appreciate your answers as I'm a novice Subie owner. Is there an easy way to check the condition of the timing belts on an '87 turbo. I just got the vehicle, but I also just spend $300 replacing the one on my Mazda. Thanks, Mark
  14. Hi Again, This is a minor question, but ever since I got my '87 Turbo wagon the inside little turbo light never comes on. Is this a usual occurance with age or should I be concerned. Its a 5 spd and runs great otherwise. Thanks M Karns
  15. Guys, What's the difference between a GL and GL-10? I get asked that all the time and have no idea. Thanks, M karns
